There are too many ruffles?

Where would you like to see daylilies headed?

For me, yest there could be too many ruffles, too many colored edges, shapes that look too distorted.

Too short when large flowered, but not too tall, ever, as long as everything is in proportion!

Not a surprise for those that know I like daylilies as a garden landscape plant.

I'd be interested in your thoughts though.

Actually, I think there will be more emphasis on expanding the colors. But this is broad- I see it from having several colors along edges, to a true blue daylily.

Once they quit looking like a daylily to me- I don't consider them one.

But, I could change my mind....

There are already to many edges, ruffles etc. for me. I prefer the "tailored" look. And, I love selfs. Give me Bela Lugosi any day. Another self I love is Kissed Off. That is a nice one.

Bobbie, I should send you a piece of one of my tall ones when I divide it. Remember, I am not very tall, and I have to break blooms off to look at them. I can't see them if they are on the scapes.

I know everyone is after true blue, but I'd love to see true any color. Yellows are good. Peach can be ok... but the reds don't hold a candle to a good red geranium or rose. Pinks and Purples have terrible color compared to phlox. Etc. Sometimes I look at the daylilies and then at my other perennials and wonder why I grow any of them other than Yellow. Even Joan Derifiled isn't that intense when you compare it to roses or phlox.

Of course, yellow is my favorite...

I like some ruffling but the chicken fat has gotten way out of hand for my tastes. I don't mind the multiple colored edges as long as they match the colors well. I love love love all kinds of spidery UF type things. a few bagels are nice but I like a mix of forms in the garden. I am usually not that into doubles, but some of them are growing on me. I like them big with gold edges or teeth not chicken fat and I'm not into the eyed doubles at all. It's too hard to see the eye, so whats the point I hope as daylies evolve we see an emphasis on garden habit as well as the beautiful face. It does no good to have a beautiful face that is 8" across if I only see 4 the whole season. I also would like to see an emphasis on true garden pics not greenhouse pics. It's great it's a fab color in Mr or Ms. hybridizers greenhouse but what does it truly do in a real- world garden? To me this is as important for the industry as new pretty faces. It does the daylily world no favors to get a customer all excited by that perfect. white, red, black or elusive blue dayliy, charge them upwards of $200.00 and when it blooms it is pink, mauve or lavender. This only serves to turn folks off and turn them to other types of plants just my opinion take it for what it's worth

I'm just learning more about the new daylilies, but I can say i love the ones that have the gold sparkles. I'd like to see more of that.

There are two many ruffles when you have to open the daylily your self. Once in a while is ok but when you have to help it every other day that's not good.
I like the multiple edge daylilies, I do not care for edge with no eye daylilies except the toothie ones.
Most of the new sculpted forms are too wierd for me and I would never buy one or register one myself.

With the number of people messing with daylilies there is no way to know what the next daylily will look like. When you have something thats this easy to work with, we hybridizers will make wierd crosses just to see the results.

I don't really care where daylilies are headed, there will always be something new and interesting, even if we don't like what we see, someone will love it. I don't believe there will ever be a blue daylily, just like there's no pure white.

I grow all forms of daylilies and I like the dip ufs more than any other.

I don't care for the new forms coming out either. I can't even tell its a daylily. I like some ruffling and edges. I think they are more delicate looking than some of the heavier gold edges. I like Karol Emmerich's. Not all of hers are heavy on the edges but they are really nice looking flowers. I am partial to dip spiders and ufo's so I would like to see some more interesting creations in those lines.

In thinking about what I "wish".... one of my favorites and best performers is tiny little Penny's Worth. I wish there were more colors and forms in the really little ones. They are so easy to tuck into the edge of a perennial border. I have Penny's Worth planted everywhere. I do have some small ones, but they are not as tiny as Penny's worth - Spacecoast Tiny Perfection, Mary Ethel Anderson, Little Wild Flower. Penny's Worth has tiny foliage and the blooms are sized right for the plant.

I would love to see a spider like Holly Dancer's color on a 12" tall plant with 1" blooms. How cute would that be?

I've never been a huge fan of lots of ruffles or colored edges. I like some delicate pie crust edging and that's about it.

I'd like to see colors that are more saturated and true, but I also love the fancy complex eyes as well, especially those with blue in them.

But what I'd love most is more and longer bloom and better rebloom.

Yes, I agree, better rebloom especially in the north. We don't get much here. I currently have 2 plants out of 300 that are sending up rebloom scapes. I hope I get more this summer since it is so hot.

Bagel is a term referring to the extremely round wide petal flowers. Wild Cherry Roundup is one that comes to mind. BTW I love your avatar! Such a pretty blue.

Rebloom in the north.

YES!

What I have found out is that we cannot rely on zones.

Zone 5 in Missouri, Nebraska etc has blooms much earlier than my zone 6 north of Boston. Much earlier! And plants do not have time to rebloom if they don't start earlier enough.

Recurrent bloom is a better goal.

I purchased 3 from Karol E that have recurrent tendencies. Problem for me is that I so heavily set on these 3 plants that I don't get to see much recurrent bloom And seedlings have not bloomed yet, or worse - seeds have not been planted.

YIKES! am I behind. Just no room at the inn, anymore!

I love all the daylily forms and colors, However, I do not like ones that do not open well, do not perform in my garden, big flowers on short scapes, small flowers on tall scapes, and flowers that bloom down in the foliage. Two of my favorites this year have been Foolish Fantasy and Stone Beacon. They both have edges but the landscape value is wonderful. F.F. has a tremendous garden presence - much flower density. S.B. is a big yellow with a gold edge that calls one across the garden. I like doubles and Treva Gene has bloomed double on every flower, in spite of drought and heat, as has Amanda's Little Red Shoes, and Jelly Filled Donut.

I don't know where we can go with daylilies. Improve colors or forms, but there is already such a variety.

I really love glitter edges. At Moldovan's the last summer I was there before he died, I saw a seedling that had magenta glitter edges. I thought that it was beautiful! Steve had not noticed it. He flagged it. Maybe we will see glitter the same color as the flowers. Imagine a dark purple with purple glitter....

What is the difference between rebloom and recurrent??

Rebloom - plant rests a bit before reblooming

Recurrent - while the plant is in bloom, you can see new scapes coming up.

Juli, you don't need Buttercream if you have Planet Claire.

They look similar and the size is the same. BC is shorter. PC has more stately presence in the garden as it is taller.

Both are large flowered.

Both have not a large budcount but if they had more, the flowers might be bumping into one another.

Both gorgeous.

I was not sure what you meant by recurrent. I have heard it called "instant rebloom." several of my seedlings do that. It is a very nice trait!
