...or wherever your pots are. My profile pic is one end of the porch, here is the other end. When it's not too hot, it's really awesome to sit out there.Thumb of 2012-07-17/purpleinopp/a3d8d2

purple: I love your porch and how you have plants hanging at different levels as well as those on the floor along the edge of the porch! I know what you mean about being too hot to sit outside this time of year ... we've had many weeks with 90ยบ+ temperatures and it's not even August yet! The heat has really limited my time outside and I'm really looking forward to a cooler fall season!

Well, I don't have a front porch but I do have a back porch/deck and when the weather isn't so hot I really enjoy it early in the morning and in the evenings when the mosquitos aren't active. We are preparing to have part of our porch/deck screened and I can't wait. Early morning is my favorite time of day when I enjoy sitting out on the deck with my coffee or tea, watching and listening to the birds. I miss having some place to hang my hanging baskets, so for the time being they are hanging in the trees. After part of the deck is screened my husband is going to install some horizontal poles for me to hang plants from. Here are a couple of pictures of my "porch":

Wow! I LOVE the way you have plants everywhere. It looks sooo peaceful and inviting. Some really nice BIG plants! May I ask what the hanging plant is in the first picture, upper left? Some kind of fern? Very interesting leaves. Also looks like there's a large corn plant. Does it ever bloom?

Can you believe I spent the weekend taking cuttings and making more hanging baskets - and putting up more hooks? I have trees in the back where I could hang more pots but there's so many mosquitoes out there - any time of day - I keep almost all potted plants out front. Your hubby sounds like a keeper! Thanks for sharing your beautiful space!

purpleinopp: Thank You for your comments. It is a very peaceful place to sit and relax when the sun isn't beating down and the mosquito's aren't out. Smiling The plant in the upper left of the first photo isn't a fern but rather the "Ric Rac" Orchid Cactus: Zig-Zag Cactus (Selenicereus anthonyanus) I've had the plant for a many years but for a very long time didn't even know what it was. It's a thorny cactus and blooms at night with very fragrant flowers. It usually blooms in May but so far this year I haven't seen any sign of buds.

I haven't had the Dracaena (Corn Plant) very long at all ... it was a gift from a niece and her husband when they moved to California last month. The foliage is a little fried in places from the sun hitting it in the afternoon so I may end up bringing it indoors until we have the deck screened.

Lin that is beautiful. The first thing I saw was your "Ric Rac" Orchid Cactus. I want one of those. Maybe you would like to trade one day.

I do not have a front porch either I have a back patio. I use tropicals and my houseplants as my plants for that area. So it is pretty much the same plants every year.

Nice hearing from you guys. My porch is loaded with so many of my plants I don't have any room left to sit. My wife is going crazy putting up with me. I leave the back porch for her but lately it's been too hot to sit out or raining all the time which brings up the humidity.
Cinta, I finally got my first Sans. 'Moonshine'. Right after I purchased it from Bob Smoley, my daughter finds one at K-Marts of all places and on clearance yet. It doesn't have that green stripe in it like yours but still very nice.

They look good Stush. I think mine got the green stripe down the middle due to the bad treatment. I do not use any special soil and they got so little water because of my travel and taking care of my mom.

I think it was stress. Sent you a tree mail if you are ready for the cactus I can send them now.

Hey, Stush. I LOVE your porch, and happy looking plants! There are hooks in the ceiling of mine but at this point, no room for a swing. Is your wife a plant-o-phile also, or is that all you? In the pic with the flag, what is the pretty variegated shrub in the bed? I see we're kin from the "wall of foliage" family. Is that a rain barrel in the 1st pic? Can't believe I caught MORE rain in my buckets yesterday. Amazing!

It's not very clear in the above pic I put up yesterday, but at the very top is a jar of water that's tied to the support post with fishing line. It's full of sweet potato vine and a big Coleus leaf. The vines are starting to grow out onto the fishing line that I strung around the poles and the roof beam. I'm liking it so much, yesterday I put a jar at the other end and hung one from one of those swing hooks in the ceiling. (What else to do with the patch of it that's still alive in the flower bed from last year - oops?) In a month it should be really cool and even more jungly. (Spell check, I disagree, that's a word. If people know what you mean, it's a word. You do know what I mean, ...right?)

And I had gotten so used to looking at that piece of bread, I "noticed" it after I looked just now to see if you could see the jar. If anyone's interested, no birds came to eat it that way... Not all experiments are successful but the only ones that succeed are those that are attempted.

Thanks for the pics!

Thanks for the pics. I enjoyed seeing the jungles. Smiling Most of my jungle is inside because it isn't easy moving everyone of my plants. Perhaps next yeay I might consider moving my plants outside...oops! Wiat a minute! I'll have to have a bigger porch built in order to do this! Smiling Seriously, there are two reasons why I do not move plants outside during the warmer months. One is that moving plants using a wheelchair isn't easy, and second I prefer not to have to deal with the bugs. I wouldn't want to bring bugs back into the house when restoring the plants to their inside environment, and being eaten every time almost when you go outside unless it's very, very early is not fun.

So, most of my plants stay inside year round unless they have to go outside for rehab or it is a matter of they are almost dead and it is the last thing I can do for them and only hope for possible survival.

My clivia is struggling so as a last resort I put it outside yesterday. I hope the leaves will stop turning uellow green, then yellow, then brown at the edges. If anyone has any ideas about what is happening, please let me know, thanks.

Dogpack, I hear people say many times they do not want to bring bugs in if they put their plants out for the summer. I have been taking my plants out for 30 years and have never and I do mean never had any mealy bugs, aphids or any other pest in the winter. I outdoor summer 100s of plants because of age I am going to cut back on the houseplants this year but that is another story.

Healthy plants you have a better chance of not having bugs in the house in the winter. By giving them a summer vacation outside is the best health you can give your plants, because our houseplants are really tropical plants if they go outside they get the tropical climate and when we bring them inside they get the rest that they would get in the tropics.

Here is a good site to read that might help you Cliva yellow leaves. You can check and see if any of these are the problem i.e. over watering, root rot, pot bound etc.

http://www.ehow.com/info_86498...

Only other things I can add are.......
Your Cliva may be getting too much light. I have had problems with plants that were growing fine until Spring and I notice leaf burn. It was because although it was too cold to take them out yet the sun direction and strength of the Spring sun is stronger than it was in the winter. So if you have shade plants you might still need to move them to another position inside even if you are not going to take them outside.

The other issue could be too much water. When the leaves on my Brugmansia start to yellow and I know the light is right water is right. I mix 1 tablespoon of epsom salt in a gallon of water and give it a drink. With in a week the leaves green up.

Good advise Cinta. also my clivia leaves do yellow if they get too much sun. They like med-shade. I never had a pot bound issue. When I recently transplanted them, there was no soil left. All roots.

Dogpack, It's too bad we live so far apart. I would help put that new porch on for you. I built my porches myself and most of my house. Now I am disabled also but still get around a bit. At one time I needed a wheelchair but thank God my back improved enought to get me around now.

Opp, I don't know which variegated plant you are talking about. Right under the flag is a volunteer Painter's Plaque, It spruts for seed easily. Gets about 15 inches tall. I have to look up the real name. The far corner is a Euonymus japonicus variegated. It stays evergreen even in zone 5. maybe colder. Starts easily from stem cuttings under glass. I have a vine type green/white, and two bush types, one green/yellow and green/white.

These guys start easy from stem cuttings in the fall, just stick them in good ground cover and come spring they grow. Plus they are evergreen in zone 6

Stush, thanks so much for the generous offer. I've read too much about the invasiveness of the Tovara and don't really have a place to put the others. They sure are pretty though. I appreciate the opportunity to admire yours from afar. Thanks for taking the time to post the pics!

Isaac's periphery wind gusts have made it necessary to pile all of my porch plants up against the wall. I hadn't realized how badly the whole area needed to be swept until I moved them. I look forward to putting everything back into an even better "wall of foliage" when this wind lets up.

Dogpack, perfectly understandable. I do have some issues with ants usually when it's time for stuff to come in. Repots can be necessary, definitely an issue to consider. The bugs that bug my pots are usually not bugging the plants, though, just me.

Hurray! I finally have a screened porch! They did the framing and screening on Thursday and returned yesterday morning to install the gutters and downspouts. I spent yesterday afternoon putting the furniture and plants back into place and now I'm loving my porch! My husband hung two ceiling fans today and the electrician is coming to hook up the electrical first thing Monday morning. The only thing left is to replace the rusty old porch light.

It's so wonderful to be able to sit outside in the evening and at night without the bother of pesky mosquito's. I enjoyed having my coffee out there at 7:00 this morning and will do so again tomorrow morning. We only screened part of the back deck, the upper deck was left open because to put a roof on, with the slope it would be almost impossible for anyone 6' tall to stand. I still have some plants to move back on that part of the deck which I will do next week but for now I'm just relaxing and enjoying the view. Smiling These are pictures of both ends of the deck, one before the fans were installed:
