I'm thrilled that Mt. Cuba Center in Greenville, DE (zone 7A/6B) is evaluating heucheras from Terra Nova, The Primrose Path and Thiery Delabroye for foliar and floral display, habit, winter hardiness, summer heat tolerance, cultural adaptability, and disease and pest resistance.

One set of plants is under shade cloth and another set in sun. The trial garden is 15,000 sq. feet designed to accomodate extensive sun and shade trials of native plants. A most tranquil setting of 600 acres and my favorite place to visit.

Hi Chris - I heard last night that while currently a reservation for a tour is required to visit MCC, they are going to start offereing some days which the public can visit without a tour. I emailed them to get details and will post.

I uploaded 50 some individual plants to the database from last night's grand opening. I would like to go back each season and shoot the colors.

I was going to ask where all of the photos came from. Thank you for adding so many to the data base. Sounds like a wonderful place to visit.

I am more concerned with the results. I have not been happy with the viability of Heucheras. If I did not love them so much I would have stopped buying them.

At this point I watch everyone and read the length of time they have had it in their garden, if they say, and the zone they are growing their plant. I have not purchased any new release for at least 2 years. I also, have had bad luck with Terra Nova. I always thought they were pumping them out to fast and not garden testing before release.

They are much to expensive to be used as a annual.

The ones by Thierry Delabroye seem to be the best growers. But Terra Nova has produced some good ones also. Stick to the ones with Villosa in their background. Always check for frost heaving many require replanting in the spring , and most preform better when divided every 3 years. Make sure they have very good drainage , they do not like to be kept wet. Also vine weevils can be a problem if not detected. Some of the ones by Terra Nova are made for different parts of the country. For example the ones that they say do well in pacific northwest do not do well for me in N.J. You can check their web site for info on their plants. You might want to try ones by The Primrose Path. They are developed in PA.

Thanks Bob. Yes I have all the ones from Primrose. I was not aware of the Thierry Delabroye grower I will look for the ones they have developed.

When I started losing them I started doing more research. I have been buying the villosa and I finally found a spot that they love. I I have what was once a gravel area that had not been gardened for years at my new house. But the soil (totally leaf mold compost) had covered the gravel from the surrounding trees. So the soil is super rich and the gravel gives it the drainage. I do not get any winter heaving.

Delta Dawn didn't look right to me in the sun bed. I went over to the shade bed and it looked the same there too. I'll add a picture from my garden as soon as camera battery charges.

I agree that I have never ever had a problem with any heux from TD or TPP.

dormantsrule, and Bob your knowledge is golden. I wish I had found you two before I threw away all that money.

It took so much research and trial and error and lots of money lost, that I feel should have been done by the Nursery Industry before they released them as perennials for zone 4-? and charging Perennial prices and not tested and confirmed that they were in fact hardy for the zones stated.

I felt cheated. So I had to back off until I found out how to do my own test at the least cost. I particularly had to be careful with funds because I am landscaping a new property and it was taking a lot out of the budget landscaping a couple acres of land.

Thanks. It's from a picture I took of potted heux in front of the lectern @ MCC.

Thumb of 2012-08-06/dormantsrule/0049df

Cinta, A lot of us are frustrated this year. I lost 11 new ones within 6 wks of planting in part shade including 6 out of 9 Paprika. The lost ones have villosa breeding and all the other heux in the same beds are fine. It's a lot of money to waste and I don't have the answer as to why they died. If I took a picture there would be nothing to see but a few black stems. Because of some nutrient overload from over fertilization 3 years ago, I have had soil tests done in every bed amd they are all within the normal range. Stainless Steel is new here this yr and not a problem at all as well as Spellbound, which is a new favorite. What I like about the trial is there are older and newer cultivars.

I just put the list above in Excel and highlighted the ones I have and added the others I have that are not being trialed. And as I went through the list, my statement earlier re: the heux from TPP and TD have never been a problem is correct. I would be happy to send you some of them and I'm sure they will do well for you in PA.

On a side note, whenever I find out what days MCC will be open without reservation I'm already planning to have a luncheon here with some Delawarean heuxheads and then we're going to the center with cameras. All of you guys are welcome too. I live right off I-95 and you can hop in my car and I will drive you. You could spend days just shooting all the native plants on the paths.

Charles and Martha Oliver, The Primrose Path
