All of your suggestions for clear, colorfast, and eye-catching colors have been so helpful for those of us who are trying to find garden candidates. I've saved red till almost-last because my searches have led me to believe it may be a somewhat elusive color in daylilies. Am I mistaken, or are there fewer reds around?

The best red... Really red... That I have grown is Holly Dancer.

Others I like are from Vic Santa Lucia or Van Sellers. They worked a lot with BIG APPLE and BILL FALL. Both of those are good reds. I have their Cherokee Star, and I like it well enough that I have kept it a long time, over ten years.

Some of Jamie Gossards go back to Holly Dancer, and tet Holly Dancer. He has some nice reds from those crosses. He is a few generations into it by now. A friend grows Megatron, and I always notice it.

So many of the reds I've tried turn out to be some version of rose red, but I do have some that I believe are true reds.

HOME OF THE FREE - Love this one! I thought TALLADEGA would be this color from the hybridizer's photo, but it turned out to be a deep rose red. And I'm very pleased with HOME OF THE FREE!

DRY HEAT by our own Lyle! Not the best picture or bloom, unfortunately, but it comes from Phoenix so you know the meaning of the name, and the plant has been doing great in our heat. I hope Lyle chimes in here with a better picture of this fantastic daylily!

CARY GRANT - I received this as a gift plant and I love it!
Thumb of 2012-09-17/Betja/60cc24

MELISSA BEGNAUD - This picture is actually from my visit to Maryott's last summer, but I loved it so much that I purchased one this summer. I can't quite remember, but Melissa may have a hint of rose in her -- totally forgivable in this gorgeous daylily IMHO!
Thumb of 2012-09-17/Betja/d795e1

CORRALITOS ROSE - One of Bill Maryott's recent introductions that I really like, and there is very little rose (if any) in it to my eye.

RENDITION - Another recent Maryott intro

COMING ALIVE - New 2012 intro from Maryott's -- and all of these last three were gift plants, if you can believe it!

And in the deeper red range:

FABULOUS FRIEDA - Love love love this one! And I'm including the last totally fuzzy picture because the true color in the shade is close to that.

I grew FIREWORKS DISPLAY years before Dottie named it. It has always been purple here. I would not have thought of it as red. I bought it as a non-selected seedling from the hybridizer sometime around 1985. I grew it for years, and finally talked her into coming and seeing it in a clump at my house. I gave her half of it back and she named it. We always called it - garden name - Dottie's Fireworks, so when she named it she kept the Fireworks part. It has been a FANTASTIC parent for me. If you grow it and you hybridize, try crossing it into things with Trahlyta in it.
