Have any of you seen the new David Austin Catalog and the new 2011 introductions? I just got the new catalog today and fell in love with several. Esp: Lady of Shalott Thumb of 2011-01-28/marti/4c94e6

That is a fabulous rose, isn't it? Terri_Emory started posting photos of it in the DG rose forum a few months ago and now everyone there wants it.

I've never ordered anything from David Austin. Their prices are a little too high in comparison with the prices at my local nurseries, even the nurseries that buy their roses wholesale from David Austin. There must be a huge retail markup on that site.

It has always seemed to me that the colors in the printed Austin catalogs are over-saturated, especially the oranges. My guess is that this rose has a less intense color, but is still a beautiful and intriguing blend.

I could hunt thru rose calalogs and make list after list of roses I'd love to have. Told my niece that I am planning on more roses and taking over her yard. She said she think about it. Rolling on the floor laughing

As Mike mentioned, those catalog photos are often over saturated, that's why I like to check them out on HMF to check the photo tabs for photos from other gardens and also read the member comments if there are any.

All of these are beautiful, but so many of them just look like duplicates of earlier Austins I already have. I can still get excited by new ones like The Endeavour or Sir John Betjeman because I don't have any twins of those, but it's difficult to believe that these new apricot-orange blends will be appreciably different from Pat Austin, Lady Emma Hamilton, Crown Princess Margareta, Carding Mill, Tea Clipper, Grace, and a host of others.

As for the new white Austins that come along every couple of years, I'm so sold on Fair Bianca that I feel no need to ever buy any other white Austin rose.

I would love to see more Austins that include two or more distinctly different colors, like The Endeavour or Christopher Marlowe, instead of being solid colors or blends of different shades of one color.

I also agree with Mike. Thank you Sue for the links. My Crown Princesse Margareta looks much more like the HMF photo.

In NJ I found DA roses to be much more robust, growing more vigorously and resisting disease much better than any HT or floribunda. Although disease is not a problem here, I'm finding DA roses seem do better than most other roses here, too. My guess is that some of the cause is the vigor of the cultivar. Some of the cause might be the rootstock. Nearly all of the roses on their own roots are just limping along. HTs on their own roots here are all but impossible to grow here ... at least given my approach to soil fertility. One exception is Don Juan which is planted so as to get only six hours of sun.

I noticed two or three times that roses on their own roots start putting out leaves before it is safe to do so, while the same cultivar on DrH rootstock waits another two or three weeks. The consequence is that two or three times I have had identical cultivars perform differently, with the own-root rose dying of frostbite in April while the grafted rose survives. Lost GSThomas this way.

Sooooo... I'm thinking that I might be moving back in the direction of DA roses from DA nursery.

I saw Crown Princess Margarita at a LGS last year after looking at it in the catalog.. big difference. Much more washed out and blah in real life versus in the catalog. Sad Which was sorely disappointing 'cuz I love that vibrant orangey-apricot. Pat Austin was more yellow than orange, but did smell good. I just don't have good luck w/Austins.. probably 'cuz I don't know what I'm doing. Smiling

My foliage is just crying. No, wait, that's me.. I haven't any foliage. I wanna be airbrushed? Do you think that if I attach my hairbrush to my blow dryer, then that'll be airbrushed?
