We have discussed iris care and our methods vary. I try to keep my iris looking great right up til frost. This involves soil prep, fertilizer, and regular watering. Mine are still green except a few pesky brown tips. Here's how mine look in mid-late October. No hard freeze yet. What about yours?

Paul those look fantastic you have some nice clumps there I will miss that next year, it will be a few years before I have some large clumps again,I was forced to dig everything and divide them all and I chose to plant in rows so it would be easier to keep track of long term. We had a early killing frost a couple weeks ago was sad to see it all go, we went to a football game in Minneapolis and I got back and everything was gone all the buds froze on the roses and annuals were black. I took a few pictures of some nice looking bulbs that I got from Superstiton gardens this year, and the bulbs I got from Barry in Australia that had wonderful increase. I even had a late bloom stalk but the frost killed it before it bloomed. The only bonus is our fall color for trees has been really nice, the cold nights and the drought has made the maples look really good this year.

This one had 10 increases

They're looking good Brad and Paul. You should have a good show next spring. The fall colors are nice too. It's been so windy here at times, that the trees are loosing the leaves before the color is changed.
Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

Wish mine looked that good! We've had 4 nites in the upper 20's so far this season, and several more that "frosted", so except for the petunias, the annuals are gone. It hasn't hurt the iris bloom stalks, or new foliage, tho. Seems to take a sustained "cold soak" of upper 20's for 24-36 hr's to really stop them. I'll get some pics later, when it 's a little warmer out(supposed to stay pretty cool ,tho, 50 is all). I've been pulling old leaves, and the beds are looking better, but I've a long way to go! Been watching 2 rebloomers, one should open today....Arlyn

Same here Bluegrassmom.
The iris farm where I dig said he never fertilizes his. I just started this year with the new plants. I dug compost into the beds and sprinkled Ozmacoat on the 3 year old plants.

Brad and Paul your increase is amazing. I probably should have planted mine sooner but a few do show progress. Unfortunately some unknowns I have in a side bed got rolled over by a garbage can during our windy weather on Thursday. Flattened them down like a pancake Sad I'm sure they'll recover and if not, well, I can always find a few more to add next year. Rolling my eyes.

DD brought home some NOID's from a friend. All had full growth leaves.
I "suggested" she cut the extra length off,she said pooh pooh. The wind blew 3 out of the ground /\.
Iris seem to be able to take a lot Julia. You will probably see something in November.

Brad and Paul, would you mind, since there is so much interest in your great looking leaves, telling us your routine, fertilizing, spraying, watering, etc.? And your soil type. I know we've discussed this elsewhere, but this thread would be a good place to discuss why some people have such great results.

Yes, please. My newly planted rhizomes are all doing OK -- new leaves, etc. -- but not the increases that you'all are showing.

Paul -- just wanted to comment on your beautiful Fall photographs. You certainly have a magnificent view! Thanks for sharing. Thumbs up

I must admit that the pictures I posted are views of my two best beds. All of mine do not look that nice. They were both empty beds fall of 2010. I added a generous quantity of organic matter, bags of dry leaves, compost from my pile and compost from the Cities green waste. I also added some 5-10-5 and bone meal. I tilled it in and planted in it 2011. Things really grow there. I hope to redo some other beds next summer. On established beds I band the clumps in early spring with something with a high middle number. I also put 2-3 handfuls of alfalfa pellets around each clump and work it in. I also use Miracle Grow with a high center number or a brand called Expert Gardener from Wal-Mart. It is cheaper and has trace elements. I just sprinkle a Tbs. or 2 around the clump, work it in and water in. I do this in early summer. Dissolving in water cans is to much work. I also water at least weekly from spring til fall.

I do not spray....I rarely see s few aphid but just wash those off. I do not spray my roses either and only have minor problems, aphid, mildew, etc.
