I have ordered a lot of roses from them...and a couple of times I have been able to go to the nursery and pick out the roses myself...that was fun! I have always been pleased with the plants...and the packing of their mail order roses is wonderful. Since they are in Texas, as well as me...they arrive really fast! You almost need to have your hole dug, before you order them...not really, but close.
I love the ARE...they are my favorite nursery.

I have to admit I've never bought any roses from ARE, mainly because the shipping to California is exorbitant, in my opinion -- 40% of the purchase price. Besides, I prefer modern roses and they don't carry any that I don't already have.

I can understand that...but for me, in the same state, the shipping isn't too high and the roses are large being 2 gallons....

Yes, that is a plus. It's very rare to find 2-gallon roses on line.

Are they appreciably larger than the 1-gallon roses from Roses Unlimited? I pay $8 for shipping on each of their roses (which comes out to 50% of the purchase price), but it's worth it because they have a lot of roses I don't already have. Besides, they have great sales, so I hardly ever pay full price for their roses.

I would have to say they are larger than RU...the bad thing about ARE, I have never known them to have a sale...

When ARE has a rose on my list, I get it from ARE. Smaller roses disappear thanks to nibblers of various sorts. ARE roses never disappear from that. And that brings ARE's price per surviving plant at the end of two years to be less than it is for most roses that are half as expensive on delivery!

Can't say my rose collection is moving in the same direction as theirs, so I find an ever smaller portion of my rose orders going to them, but it's a great place to turn to when one is starting a rose garden.

I just got done planting a few roses from ARE. Crepuscule, Cramoisi Superieur, Marie Pavie (2), Pink Parfait (2), Magic Dragon, Buff Beauty, Don Juan, Gloire de Lyon, and Lady Hillingdon. It's the first time I've seen them strip the leaves from the roses before shipment, but they clearly did this, as the only leaves they had were ones that had opened in transit.

Several from ARE that I planted last year: Rise 'n' Shine, Hermosa, Mons Tillier & ZD are doing wonderfully - they are among the best roses in the garden. Several from that batch are languishing: Sombreuil and Celine Forestier, and a red Kordes floribunda whose name escapes me at the moment.

Thanks for the note of encouragement, Melva! On those early spring mornings when last year's canes have dried to nothing and there's but a cluster of new leaves sticking out of the ground, it takes some resolve to fight the temptation to replace them with something more conspicuously vigorous. But I think a well established CF is one of those garden beauties definitely worth waiting for.

Hi I just ordered American Pillar and Pinkie Cl. from them. Was wondering what experiences people have had with these varieites? Thanks!

I grow Pinkie and it is wonderful. Mine make great mounds of canes as I don't train them onto anything and they are covered in blooms from late March until mid winter. No disease problems - and I don't spray or fertilize.

I received what I expect to be my last rose order for the year:

Katarina Ziemet
Ducher
Don Juan
Mme Alfred Carriere
Andenken an Alma l'Aigle
La Reine
Mrs Oakley Fisher
Caldwell Pink

I notice that my success rate for bare root roses is low if I do not plant in March or early April. And that mid to late April works best for potted roses. Over the last three years I have ordered roses for delivery later in the season from various suppliers and here is the approximate success rate:

June (bare root roses) 0% for ten
July N/A
August (potted own root roses) 60% for 15
September (potted own root roses) 30% for 8
October (potted own root roses) 0% for 15

I am reminded of this because this order replaces more than half the roses I got from ARE in September of last year. I'm sure that people in coastal California will have very different experiences. Maybe people in the east will as well. But I'd bet that this is not atypical of results in places where the temperature bounces around a lot. Frost kills fall-planted plants. Drought kills May-June planted bare root plants.

I write this for my own edification, so that I can resist the chatter about all the great deals on roses between now and October. Somebody please remind me to just go out and buy mulch.

Steve - Go buy mulch. First, buy a truck. Then buy mulch. Mulch mulch mulch. Get cedar mulch so you don't have moth problems. Mulch mulch mulch.

Steve, I'm impressed by your record-keeping. I have no idea when I planted most of my roses or which group they were in when they croaked. (Of course they are not covered by any guarantees, either.) Oh yes, be sure to buy some more mulch.
