Here's the great article for wintersowing done a while back. Maybe we should "sticky" it in the Seeds Forum?

Allison (moderator),
Could you "Sticky" this thread so we have quick access to the article? It took me a while to search for it, not realizing the article had wintersowing spelled with two words rather than one.

I've had pretty good luck with tomatoes. Less so, with peppers and eggplants...

I wintersow a few tomatoes every year, but that's the only veggie I do. One thing to remember with wintersowing veggies, many are very dependent on temperature for germination. Tomatoes seem to sprout well in their jugs or cups with a not-too-hot temp. Peppers need a lot more warmth, I think. My guess is peppers would do much better, and sprout earlier, in warmer climates.

Spring time here in my zone 6 tends to be rather cool, cloudy, and rainy. That's not the most conducive to sprouting.

I use it mostly for perennial seeds that require cold treatment for sprouting. My greatest problem in seed starting is letting the plant establish itself before transplanting - I tend to be a bit impatient. But when they're in the jugs, I tend to let them be until they are fairly large, so there is a better success rate.

I just placed an order with Gardens North Whistling Don't know where I'm going to put everything if it all sprouts.

Which phacelia are you seeding?
Phacelia campanula (Californai Bluebells) and phacelia tanecetifolia (mauve flowers on lacy foliage)
are good as direct sow also.
I have only a few seeds of other phacelia which i will do as WS.

I would like to get seeds for the large flowered variety of the campanula one, but so far have not found any.

Is the Large clear Spring Mix salad containers deep enough to use for wintersowing?

You should shoot for 3" of soil depth. Those salad containers will suffice, but then there's no head room left for seedlings.

I've used them, then always regret it. Taller containers like milk jugs or two liters just work out much better for me.

I agree. The height of the milkjug is what creates the mini-greenhouse effect. Also, once they sprout, they will need the space for the plants to grow up.

I've had the best results with winter sowing. I think the only poppies I've started direct in the garden that are an exception are the gold California poppies.

Wintersown poppies did well for me. Poppies like the cold. Where do you live, bluepoppy?
