I'm interested in "old" daylilies after reading about the history of daylilies and the hybridizers who started this great frenzy. I tip my hat to you.

I would find it very interesting to find out what the oldest varieties grown by members here might be.

Anybody have the species daylilies?

George Yeld's "Apricot" ??

What is the oldest thing you grow?

I think I'm gonna collect the "antiques"...when I grow up. Lovey dubby Lovey dubby

My oldest is Hyperion, and I love it! It smells great, and always performs well, even when the others don't. Maybe that's why it's been around so long! I used it for hybridizing, and it passed along it's great scent to it's babies, and they smell even better, which was surprising!

Sorry, but all I could find was a clump shot.

At this time in 2012:

The oldest one I grow is....

'Gentle Shepherd' Yancey 1980

'Summer Wind' Bryant-E. 1982

The next two oldest I grow are after that are.....

'Love or Else' Hanson-C. 1998

'You Look Marvelous' Rice-J. 1998

All the other DL's I grow are from 2001 and later after these three.

I used to grow approx. 400 DL's, but cut back a lot! I had a lot of older ones then. I tend to grow the taller spidery ones now.
Welcome to the Agastache and Salvias Forum!

My oldest, which I don't currently have pictures of, would probably be species Lemon Lily and Middendorfii.

Other than these two species, I still have a lot of older ones that I just can't part with. A lot of them are Wild's.
Am not going to post all, as way too many. Here are a few.

H. citrina - discovered by Baroni in 1898.

My family and I own a cottage in western PA, or which about 1 acre of the property used to belong to a daylily farm in the 1960's. There are many NOID's growing 'wild' there now. Every year I bring a couple of these "old fashioned" dips back home with me. It generally takes them a couple of years to settle in.

Currently, I don't want to "mix" any of the new cultivars with these oldies, and to help revive them, I have purposely purchased some older ones to take up there. H. citrina was one of those. But, I ended up planting it at the house because it arrived after my vacation, so I just popped it in the ground, planning on moving it the next spring.

Well, I fell in love with that oldie. Simple yellow flowers, nocturnal and fragrant, it will always have a spot at my house. I just love it. I also have a few others, but I am at work right now, so I can't post any photos either. I will try to get a better list tonight.

The oldest here is the species middendorfii which starts bloom season in mid June. Next would be Hyperion 1924 and Kindly Light 1949. Other favorites that are more than 25 years old include...

Think I might like yours better with its slightly darker coloring, Cindy. Smiling

Char, Dixie was one of the first daylilies I got from Bob Selman in my early not-yet-addicted phase. That white midrib is part of the reason I now seek enabling wherever I can find it. Hilarious!

I have some form of "lemon lily" but I don't know enough about the species to know which one. Came from my Mom -( she is 88) her great Aunt's garden... so probably 100 years old.

Debra, I remember the non-addicted phase and that first daylily that sparked the full-blown addiction. Margaret listed Designer Jeans, this was the first dl that got me interested. Somewhere back in the 80's, maybe after it won it's HM, there was a photo in a magazine of Designer Jeans, this was the first dl I had ever seen that wasn't orange. At the time we rented so I cut that image out and put it in the someday house folder. The summer after buying our home I found the image and went on a search for Designer Jeans and planted a small 4 foot bed with DJ and a few other $5 - $10 dl's. Four years later I came across an image of Curt Hanson's new introduction Supreme Empire......still can't walk past it without stopping to enjoy the blooms!
