OK, got my first shipment of roses in. The canes were pretty gosh-darned dry. They were shipped in wet newspaper 3day fed-ex, but still they were very dry. I'm thinking that they were kept in their cooler for too long. Anyways, I have them soaking in 2 buckets of water w/"QuickStart" (yes, a MiracleGro product.. no haters please). I'll be putting them in the ground tomorrow (Friday) once I find the PERFECT spot for them as these 3 are going together as a grouping. I got 2 Rhapsody in Blue (http://cubits.org/roses/db/ros...) and they're going to go on either side of White Licorice (http://www.helpmefind.com/rose...). Oh I just can't WAIT!

I put one of my gloves (size Large.. these are Home Depot gloves, 5 for $5) next to the roots so everyone can see the wonderful size of the root system with these roses. Yes, it's all 3 roses tied together, but still, look how fricking HUGE the root systems are!!! MUCH MUCH better than a pathetic body bag!!

YAY!

Toni,

I just got my order of Vavoom from GVR this week, and it, too, was extremely dry. The skin on the canes was shriveled, and the roots were nearly dry. Oddly, the entire plant was not placed inside the plastic bag it was shipped in. Only the roots were surrounded by plastic, and the bag was tied off at the bud union, so this left the canes exposed to dry air while the plant made its week-long trek from California to New York. The roots were merely wrapped in some damp newspaper. I'm really perplexed. I'm going to need to send a note to Fallon or Mark to let them know that normally I would return a rose in this condition, but I cut the canes back and saw that the piths had not yet turned brown, so I soaked it for a few days and the skin on the canes has since rehydrated, so maybe it will survive. I kind of doubt it, but it might be worth a try. I selected this rose in person while visiting the nursery in February, when it was still potted, and it was very healthy then, and Fallon took very good care of me that day, giving me and Zuzu a complete tour of the nursery as it began to wake from its winter dormancy. She's a real sweetheart, and I briefly met Mark when visiting the nursery the first time last year, and he's a real gentleman. I'm sure they'll be helpful if I bring this to their attention.

I soaked mine for 3 days before putting them in the ground. When I get home this evening, I'm going to check to see if they are starting to swell. Everyone else who survived the winter is putting out leaves (today's going to be 70 degs) so they should be doing SOMETHING. If they don't survive, I won't be ordering from them for 2012. Sad I'm a bit disappointed on how dry they were. I planted them about 2' down and then piled mulch on top of them so that only about an inch of canes are showing.

How disappointing. I wonder if they had trouble with their cooler.

I don't think that it's a matter of what was wrong with their cooler. I got the distinct impression from the gentleman who called for the credit card that he'd not rather hold on to them but ship them out immediately. Maybe they don't want to ship roses out to colder places? I'm sorry, but in my area, I just cannot be putting roses in the ground in Feb/March.. mainly because the ground's usually still a frozen brick at that time.

I talked to him, too. And I got exactly the same impression. For me it is physically possible to put roses into the ground in February, I just fear for their health, knowing that a good cooler will probably be better for them than yo-yo weather and dryness. That said, if I ever order from GVR again, I'll take delivery in late February.

My assumption is that they do not cover the canes in order to prevent fungal infection but it does tend to dry out the canes.

I got four Sunsprite on fortuniana rootstock from GVR and they are setting foliage like there's no tomorrow. Brass Band is sprouting. Showbiz looks like it is half dead. The rest seem to be developing slowly but normally - not yet setting leaves but getting ready to do so.

My bet, Toni, is that the care you have lavished on your roses will result in their doing well.
