Please add your pics of the patterned daylilies that you are growing or of your seedlings. I have visited Bob Faulkners place a few yrs ago and was just blown away with the seedlings there! Here is a link to his page.

I think many new and interesting daylilies will be coming for us to enjoy in the future.

I used WILD DREAMS unmercifully with the dips because it is so fertile both ways. Used PAINTED RAINBOW the same with the test, it sets seed so easy. The white UFs are not easy to set seed on but I have used the pollen a lot.

Nice patterns Dot.

Is it true that up north if it's cooler the patterns (or is it the blue color) is not as visible? I think I heard that somewhere, but have no clue where or when I heard it.

I am also hearing a bunch of love for Dragonfly Dawn as a major player in the pattern daylilies.

Beautiful photos ~Jan

Jan, I think it all depends on the daylily. There are some that show the pattern more with heat and there are some that show it better with cooler weather. I can't remember who's website it was on, but they said their patterns

Here in the north we do see differences in patterns. Some will show more pattern with warmer temps, others with cooler and some are consistantly patterned regardless of temp. The change in temperture and how it relates to the pattern can be different for each cv or seedling. Some may change at 65 while others 55, the question adding to this is when does this temperature change need to occur to change the pattern, the day before a bud opens, 2 days...does the heat/cold on the day it opens change the pattern? Jerry Hyatt is one that shows a heavy silver overlay with cooler nighttime temps. When it gets warmer the silver breaks and shows the leopard or cheetah spotting pattern. I haven't recorded the timing or temps for changes, just simple observation.

This older sdlg below only showed the arrows when the temps were below 55 for at least 2 nights. While interesting, the 55 temperature for pattern was not a trait I wanted so it was composted several years ago.

And this seedling has been consistantly the same from it's maiden bloom in '07 first image to the image from last year regardless of temp. Every bloom is the same. This is one I have been working with.

I saw some of these temp dependent patterns this past summer in some of my seedlings. It was, for the most part an extraordinarily hot, dry summer. But we had one or two periods of a day or two when it dropped down to the low 60's (I think) and the highs were upper 80s to low 90s instead of 100-110 with lows of upper 70s to lower 80s. Here are what the seedlings looked like with the different conditions.

Some of the differences are subtle and others pretty dramatic. Wish that the Stack the Deck seedling looked like that all the time.

So many of the beautiful patterns (i.e. the Carpenter Kaleidoscopes, etc.) are diploids, but Jane Trimmer's DRAGONFLY DAWN is a tet - YEA!!! I'm not sure, but I think it has TET. TEXAS KALEIDOSCOPE in its parentage. So this opens up even more possibilities for exotic eye patterns in the tetraploids!

Those are gorgeous seedlings, Char and Ann, and I absolutely love that last really pastel of Char's!

Correction: DRAGONFLY DAWN has SOLAR BLUE ANGEL in its parentage, not TET. TEXAS KALEIDOSCOPE. And of course GET JIGGY is the other tetraploid that I can think of with an exotic eye pattern.
Betty
