I was wondering if anyone had extra seeds to trade that attract hummingbirds.

One year I planted something that was red and the little guys just loved it. A red salvia maybe. If you have it or a red sage LMK or even just post what you are using in your garden to attract them. I have feeders but I enjoy seeing them out in the garden.

I don't save many seeds anymore, and I don't honestly know if I have any hummer seeds to trade. I might have some older ones in my seed box, but probably won't be in "seed mode" and go through that box until after Christmas. I'm in holiday mode now. Smiling

My hummers seem mostly attracted to salvias (annual and perennial), penstemon, lobelia cardinalis, nicotiana. But they're not picky eaters. I get a lot of them and they visit almost every flower, including zinnias, impatiens, butterfly bush, and petunias. Sometimes it seems it depends on the actual cultivar, though. Nicotiana has always been a big attractor for me, but I've tried a few of the dwarf variety (which had no fragrance) and the hummers totally ignored them, so maybe fragrance matters. But if anyone knows of a fragrant nicotiana 1 to 2 feet tall, please tell!

Hi, Karen
I am in Holiday mode too. Going to BG to finish some gift shopping and getting some more deco ribbon.

I haven't planted any of the tall nicotina, they take up a lot of space. Do they do well in dry weather? Last summer we had days of over 100 degrees. I had a hard time trying to water everything. Many plants suffered.

Yes, they were pretty drought tolerant for me. But some of my tall ones got to be 5-6' tall, and they cave over in heavy rain or wind. It hard to stake things that are that big, so I've eliminated most of the tall ones.

I tried a dwarf, Perfume Red, last year. They were pretty, short, and easy to stake. But they had no evening fragrance like the taller ones did, and I never saw the hummers go near them. Hence, my quest for a fragrant dwarf continues.

My old tall ones were very fragrant in the evening, but became a pain with their rampant volunteers and massive size

My little list would just be a repetition of just a few of Marilyn's. How would you start most of them, Marilyn?

Don't know if some of the plants I listed can be grown as seeds. Some are cuttings before I bought them.

Seems to me hummers like most petunias but the old fashioned ones more than some newer hybrids. Maybe because the older ones are more fragrant? I see them going for all colors of petunias. And calabrachoa. Impatiens, too.
