Hi, I thought for the beginning collectors and others too, that it would be fun to see what does well in our gardens and are reasonably priced.

I will always have several but I will start with a few pics. Please join in.

At one time I had a bed (110) of Munson daylilies, I think I have nine today due to hurricane Ivan destroying the beds and name tags. This is four I took photos this year.

Milk Chocolate: Carney 1967. This is such a fun little brown one. Although it didn't do as well in this past summer's drought, the prior years it was a crazy bloomer. I have had it for 3 years now. (sorry the photo is blurry)

H. Citrina: registered by Baroni 1897. I just absolutely love this one. The trumpet shaped blooms, it's scent, it's fun nocturnal habit. When this one blooms, it is a reminder of how far we have come with daylily hybridization. I will always have a place for this one in my garden.

I have more oldies, which I love & enjoy for various reasons ~Jan

PEGGY JEFFCOAT is another older one that I take more pictures of than most--always photogenic, and grows well here too.

Just one more for now--PLINKO is an early bloomer that just looks great with the Echinacea!

Theresa, my garden is full of them. I used to grow thousands of my own seedlings and hundreds of named cultivar. Now, I have about 20 seedlings, and there are around 75 older ones, with a handful of ones registered in the last 2-3 years. It was so, so difficult to widdle down to a manageable number. Like getting rid of old friends.

I hope to do an article about the ones I kept and how or why I chose them to keep.

One thing I kept in mind --- so many of the new intros have some sort of eye or edge. I think this trend will pass, and it will be hard to breed those edges and patterns out. I've kept a few really good selfs that have great plants here. I am not a big fan of eyes or edges. One other thing I kept in mind on what to keep - I wanted plants that did well here - nice scapes and foliage - however I don't want plants that increase like crazy, because it is to difficult for me to divide. I rarely fertilize to keep down extra growth.

A couple examples...
This is one of my seedlings, but I love it.

This one is the most wonderful red. That sheen around the throat area is something I am always on the look out for. Bela Lugosi, Sleepy Hollow and Holly Dancer all have it too.

And, I have loved Kissed Off since I got it when it was introduced. It blooms just above the foliage, but the color is the most wonderful intense rose, and it has a very green throat. Always has great branching and bud count.

Some of those older daylilies are still worth their place at the table. I've always liked Marked by Lydia, and those saturated red/orange Munsons are beautiful as are "Kissed Off" and "Ascension by Fire". The double yellow Mount Helena is also an eye catcher for me.....I have several older daylilies that I really like, but two are doubly precious this year as they proved very resistant to rust. One is the pink Yesterday Memories and the other an older Carpenter named "Coral Corduroy".
