This seed longevity chart does not always agree with ATP members observations.
It is a guide only. It is also important to know how the seeds were stored for a particular longevity.

I will state for a fact that seeds stored in a metal garden shed through the summer in Alabama are not very good the next year. Zero percent germination out of three planting of last years carrot seed, with a new pack of seed looks like pretty good germination! Rolling my eyes.

They probably cooked. Even in Minnesota, my shed gets too warm in the late winter. One year I tried overwintering delosperma in the shed because I always have a problem with winter wet in late winter/very early spring. They came out of dormancy too early and subsequently froze. And there are no windows in the shed, either.

And yes, I disagree with somethings on that longevity chart, also. But one has to start somewhere, I suppose.
Everyone should remember that with Mother Nature, there are no unbroken rules.

On the other hand, I left some Lisianthus seeds in my closed up greenhouse through 2 summers, hot enough that the plastic clock in there melted. Said what the heck and sprinkled them on some potting soil, rather than just tossing them, and got a whole bunch of nice little plants. They were still attached to the shriveled up plant, so maybe that made a difference.

I'm compulsive about keeping seed records, and record my findings on my website. For many species, I have records for the same seed lot over multiple years, and you can watch how it goes down year by year. For example, http://www.robsplants.com/plan... (seed-starting details near bottom of page). While many seeds don't have much more than a year of life in them (and some less), I'm amazed sometimes at how long they stay viable!

And just to prove the perversity of all things. I haven't grown white Lavatera trimestris in about 5 years. I tried some of my saved seeds last year and not a one sprouted. I noticed a couple of weeks ago that I had left the seed packet, once again, out in the GH over the summer where things get ever so toasty. Figured, what the heck, soaked all the remaining seeds and popped them in to some seed trays. Guess who now has a bumper crop of white Lavatera sprouts? Sigh.

Do we have our own seed longevity chart here somewhere? I just germinated 8 yr old Dreadlocks Amaranthus seeds I'd like to add to the list if we have one!

You could at least put that information in the comments for that plant. Useful information to have!

It appears that this link's domain is now for sale and the link is no longer working.

Perhaps @Dave or one of the mods can make the call whether to "unsticky" this thread.

Hmmm. Do we want to create our own Seed Longevity Chart?
