I just tried, more than once, to add a new plant and I keep getting the message:
Important: Don't add quotes around the names. The system will add those automatically when appropriate.

which I never did or ever do. Glitch?

That is not an error message; it is an informational message that I added to that page a long time ago because some members didn't know not to add the quotes and they kept adding them. Smiling

I know but I am not adding quotes and can't get past it to add a new entry, I have tried several times already.
I am trying to add: Camellia 'Autumn Carnival', just tried again, same thing.

Oddly, every time I come back to this thread, "EasySolve" tells me I'm not connected to the Internet. It's not true, of course, and it's puzzling. Why this thread and no other? Confused

Yeah but can you guess where I went wrong? Rolling my eyes. Ironically, I just helped someone else a few days ago that contacted me in t-mail that did the exact same thing, said she couldn't create a new entry and I knew instantly what the problem was. And now, for the first time I may add, Sticking tongue out I did the same thing she did. Except I panicked and came here to post about it. Hilarious!

I am kind of a newbie and and kind of computer illiterate, for the last couple of weeks I get the Don't add quotes message also when I try to add new plants. I haven't figured out what I'm doing wrong. Shrug! HELP!!! Blinking Confused

You haven't done anything wrong Sue. Just continue on filling in the information. The big red statement is just to let you know that you shouldn' add quote marks when entering the name.

When I get all the information on and hit add it just goes back to that screen with the don't add quotes which I didn't and it won't add the plant. I've added the same kind of plants before so I think I've got the information right but apparently I'm not doing something right. Do you think it could be something with my computer?

So are you saying that you are unable to add any new plants? Then you are doing what I did earlier today, not adding the genus so it doesn't know where to place the entry within the database. Green Grin! The red message you see is there at the outset, it just seems like it's now glaring at you with a new message but it has nothing to do with why your proposal doesn't go through.
Maybe Dave needs to add something to the effect that filling in the genus section is required to complete the entry.

Oh, and if you leave the cultivar field blank, like accidentally add it to the Trade name, it does the same thing. Ask me how I know. No, wait, don't.

When I tried to add a plant a little while ago I put Cape Primrose in the common name, streptocarpus in species, and the variety name in cultivar. I hit add and it spun the little thing for a second and didn't do anything. What did I do wrong? Confused

Streptocarpus is the genus, not the species.
