Hello everyone!
I just recently sparked an interest in succulents and have found my obsession to be growing (both literally and figuratively) ever since! I have done lots of research on the plants, but still consider myself a novice and would appreciate any and all advice from you more experienced growers! So far, I have an assortment of different cuttings that I have been trying to get to thrive and root as well as an abundance of echeveria "topsy turvy". Just recently, however, I discovered the wonders of jovibarba and sempervivum. I ordered some Jovibarba rollers that should get here this week and am very excited to plant them! Any advice on how to best help my new plants get going to a healthy start in their new home? Also, I've read a lot on here about plant trading. I obviously don't have much to offer at this point, but am definitely interested in expanding my collection of these enchanting plants! Any insight into the world of plant trading would be much appreciated! Sorry for the long-winded note, I am just so excited by all the enthusiasm I've found on this forum! Thanks!

Can give you some advice off the top of my head to get you going with the others...save your plant ID from anything you buy or order. Someone will always ask you what you got!!! No matter where you live think DRAINAGE if you want to get into semp and jovi planting. You'll probaby need to give more info regarding what you want to do with your soon to be coming plants. Smiling

I am in Nashville, TN so currently I have been keeping my plants indoors near windows to keep them out of the frost but still try to get them enough light!

I got Jovibarba rollers in the "Hedge Hog" and "Madam Lorene" varieties from SMG Succulents and can't wait for them to arrive. I am hoping to place the "Hedge hog"s in a container for a present for my dad (he's been dropping hints about wanting a succulent arrangement of his own) and will want to move the "Madam Lorene"s outside in the spring with the rest of my plants. I'll be sure to post pictures when they arrive!

Welcome! Serse! I think you're in the right place! (but be careful, these people temp you into expanding your plant collections with photos and info and all the enthusiasm ) I joined ATP in November when I was about to order some semps (including rollers which I totally love! Hedgehog was one of the ones I bought, highly recommend it, they're cute and they grow fast - in Seattle anyway! By the way, sempervivums are cold hardy, so they really shouldn't be bothered by cold, in fact they'll probably like it...water them less but still water if it hasn't rained, and if you do keep them inside for the winter before planting in the ground make sure they're near a drafty window!
Websemps - Bev and I both bought a bunch of semps and planted them (for myself I just liked how they looked I didn't care what they were called) until folks on here kept saying - ooh that's pretty what is it??? And I realized if I don't know what it is, how will I be able to get more of what I liked? Suddenly I am paying attention to names! haha Anyway, I think you'll see we are fun and friendly here! (and there are even some experts...I'm an expert at loving plants and experimenting, and guessing at what a plant's name is!!) Big Grin

Thanks everyone for the welcome! I definitely see the value in knowing what your plants are because for most of mine, it is a guessing game! I will be sure to hold on to the tags in the future. I've been looking at the other forums and everyone's semps are so beautiful! Are most of these acquired through trade or through a nursery? I would love to add a few semps to my collection-- is online ordering the best way to go? Confused

Also- what is the best soil for sempervivums and jovibarba? For my others, i used a combo of potting soil, perlite, and sand and it seems to be doing alright. Anyone know of a better mix?

I've been waiting very impatiently for the "trading" to begin!! I have all of my "wants" listed in the plant list (which you should do if you're interested in trading so people know what you're looking for!) I've never done this before so I'm very excited! (I'll have lots of questions once we get closer!)
Seriously though Serse, one resource on ATP that I appreciate is that in most of the forums there is a resource list, with everyone's opinions on who they like or don't like! (that would be online ordering) There is a great nursery in your neck of the woods - kindof
from W Virginia, called Northhills nursery - I haven't ordered from them yet, but want to! In our 2013 chat thread there was conversation regarding the importance of balancing trading with purchasing (to keep some of these nurseries - which are almost all small businesses, in operation...I'm sorry if I go on and on - I'm a newly converted semp lover!
Cheers

Welcome! Serse, so happy to have you join us! Hurray!

Your potting mix is close to mine. I use potting mix, perlite and chicken grit. If you use sand, just make sure it is very coarse to allow for good drainage. Fine sand can turn into a hard mass and actually prevent drainage. They're pretty tough little plants. I'm in Wisconsin and mine make it through our brutal winters just fine.

Stay tuned - in March theres going to be a Sempervivum Week on All Things Plants when lots of great articles and information will be featured!

Yes, there are some great on-line nurseries to order plants from. I see you found SMG, which is one of the best! Here is a link to some other good ones: The thread "Succulent Nurseries" in Sempervivum forum How fun that your Dad is also interested! Thumbs up

I'm looking forward to your pictures too. Can never have too many pictures!

Serse, I see you have already met more of the semp lovers, and they've all given your great advice. Big Grin

I agree with Greg and Chris, semps love the cold. You might want to pot your new plants up and set them outdoors. They come from a nursery that grows them cold.

Also, just so we don't keep asking your where you live, you can go to your profile and add that information, along with your growing zone. It will show in all your posts in the upper right side. Just like Chris, Greg and Spring's.

Trading will start up probably about March, when weather starts moderating. For the northern members that may still be covered in snow, it might be April or May.
Many of us trade our semps for other types of plants.

Greg's suggestion about using the List feature, at the top of the page, is a great way to keep track of what you would like to trade for, and what you might have to trade. It is a great tool. Thumbs up

If you need help with anything, just ask any member here at ATP. It is such a friendly group of people. We love interacting with other plant lovers. Big Grin

chicken grit...hmmm...i'll give that a try for these new Jovis I have coming! I'll try setting them outside too.
I've also started working on my "list" of plants for trading etc. I feel like i may miss out on trading this spring since I don't really have many plants to offer in return, but I can't wait to see the process and maybe get a few new plants!
Hopefully my new jovibarbas will be here by Saturday and I will post pics as soon as they arrive! I'm also thinking of making a trip this weekend out to a local nursery that has a greenhouse with a pretty good assortment of succulents, but thats always a dangerous place to go- it seems i can't leave empty handed!

Big sighhhhhh. *Blush*
I'm afraid many of us have the problem serse. Whistling

I love chicken grit. I use a lot of it, and course sand also.

Hey serse, try taking your camera to the nursery. Sometimes I get so excited about all the plant photos I'm taking home, that I forget to actually buy plants. And your no leaving empty handed. Big Grin

Excellent idea to bring the camera along, lynn! I'll let you know how that works out haha
Greg- I agree me too! I can't wait to learn more about the process as it draws closer. Until then, I will be continuing to update my list of wanted plants. Of course, that is a process that I feel will never be complete. Each time I go to add a plant, I find three more I like just as much! I definitely see what everyone is talking about when they say ATP makes the addiction even worse! And here I thought I was obsessed before... Lovey dubby
