I looked at the seeds I had in the fridge, and finally there are some little roots coming out of them! I potted them up and am eager to see what happens. Brad had sent me some when he found out none of my crosses took. These are really his babies, I'm just the foster father! Hilarious!

Tom that is good news !!! I started mine in the fridge using Paul's method and it worked really really good, I started checking them in early Feb. and noticed root growth in the paper towels some were trying to grow through the paper towels so I moved them to the neighbors greenhouses and potted them and they have done really well for us.We decided to experimate a little and see what size pot they would grow best in a greenhouse and could we push them a little so we tried 3 packs like you would buy petunias in, 4" pots like most annuals come in and then planted whole crosses in 8" azalea pots. The thought process being if i can get them to germinate quicker in the smaller pots and then up size to what ever so be it let's just get them growing. I was hoping to get a couple hundred to germinate and within six weeks I have over a 1000 up and growing it is amazing how fast they come on when they are happy. Here are pictures over the past month. Now the problem will be where to plant them all. Big Grin

Feb 8th Potted up in different sizes to see if germination is faster in smaller trays in greenhouse.

Feb 20th Starting to see germination in bigger pots and 4" trays

March 1st ..They are starting to come on really good still early but some plants look to have really good growth habits and some crosses are not showing anything.

Thumb of 2013-03-24/ARUBA1334/56d0c3 Thumb of 2013-03-24/ARUBA1334/607804

March 6th.. Alot of growth in a weeks time they are really starting to take off in the 4" pots we planted 2 seeds per pot in some crosses that had over 35 seeds hoping to get at least one up and this week there are multiples showing. We also started upsizing the 3 packs to 4" pots.

March 19th ..I have something germinated in every cross now and they are looking really good some of the plants are carrying over the parents good traits with thick leaves and excellent growth, starting to get excited about a few of them at this stage it probably means nothing but some crosses really stand out in plant size and growth. In the coming weeks will start to move them to one of there colder greenhouses to slow them down so far it has been fantastic.

They are looking wonderful. In a small way I feel a little like a great-grandpa Thumbs up The problem is where to plant them but if I recall right some of your pictures looked liked you had some possible room. I transplanted mine into 3 inch pots about 6 weeks before I wanted to plant them out and they had great root systems at transplanting time. Push them and you can have bloom next spring and I'll be excited to see your seedlings. Maybe some ARUBA intros in 3-4 years Thumbs up What crosses are you most anxious to see?

Wow they look great! I wonder if they need to be hardend off some, like you do with vegetables before putting them in the direct sun? Maybe Paul knows. You are lucky to have a green house so near that lets you use the space. We have some snow again today, and it's really dreary out. Yesterday it was sunny and bright. March has been all lion, and not much lamb this year. lol

I grew mine at first in sunny windows and under gro-lights in the house and then in April I moved them into an unheated green house for a few weeks. I had to run a space heater a few nights when the temps dropped. I think this hardened them. Then in mid May I planted them out...about the same time we plant tomatoes here

Paul Thanks you certainly helped in this process your refrigerator process worked superbly A funny story one of my neighbor's salesman who they buy there seeds and starts for annuals stopped by when we were first getting these going and asked what we were doing at the time, he explained to him we were starting Iris from seed and he laughed and told us we were wasting our time that other commercial growers he knew had tried to get them going and they had no germination, Well he stopped back there a couple weeks ago and they told me I should have seen the look on his face with all those pots of seedlings Rolling on the floor laughing The plants that look the best so far are the Noble Gesture Kids most have really thick blades just like it, I am excited to see what happens with them I tried crossing it with different stuff wanting to put a different color beard on it and then lines in the falls and this spring I will be trying for a band around the falls so I guess we will see what happens. Here are a few of the crosses that seemed to do well with lot's of seeds and I am hoping I have a winner there somewhere. I still have not figured out where they are all going to go I used to just plant on the frontside of the berms and I am all the way around the back of them now. Big Grin I know I will have to eliminate a lot of the older ones in my big bead I may use that one just for seedlings either way It has been a lot of fun I just was not prepared for another 1200 to 1500 plants this year.

Tom I would love to get them outside but at the way winter is hanging on it will be a while. The neighbor's have been a huge help they have a local garden club that meets on a monthly basis, and they always bring a bunch of people by at bloom time ,so this year I explained to them what I wanted to do and they agreed to help me get them started and let them sit in the greenhouses until the weather changes so I have been lucky to have there help and have enjoyed being able to work in a greenhouse there is nothing like opening a door from the outside and walking in a building and smelling Spring. They have another one just for perennials that is kept a lot cooler and not regulated as much I will move them in a couple weeks to slow them down if the growth keeps up at this pace.

Eko Thank You !!

Those are some great crosses. Now it is fun to think of what crosses might be good for another generation when they bloom....Seedling X named cultivar or seedling X seedling.

Wow Brad -- your photos are amazing! I've never seen the seeding process before. I was amazed to see roots sprouting from the seeds on the paper towels. Somehow, I thought they didn't germinate until they were in soil. Thanks for sharing -- I really enjoyed seeing this.

Have fun foster-fathering and great-granpa-ing, guys!! I'm having fun vicariously!!

Paul I spent all winter going through catalogs looking at parentages trying to get a plan of action for this spring and plan some specific crosses, but hard to tell what will be blooming at the same time and if they will have pollen, I tried to pay attention in Oregon on what plants seemed to be good parents and what some of the kids looked like on what was marked and I have high hopes for some of the newer Ghio stuff.

Mary Ann Thanks !! I was just as surprised when I opened the paper towels and found roots, some had grown all the way through the paper towel I hurried down the street and got them potted thinking it might be a problem but they took right off as you can see from the pictures, I will update this every couple weeks with pics if there are some major changes in them the next thing I am curious about is how long before we have a bulb, I think that will be the next thing I am looking forward to seeing as of yesterday all of the 4" pots had germinated and I still had some new ones showing up in the 8" pots so after 6 weeks or so they are still coming on strong.

Dee Thank You for your help I am excited looking forward to walking my own beds and seeing my own seedlings for the 1st time does not matter if they all are duds it is a fun process and I am enjoying it. Just gonna try and use the best plants I can and hope I can get something different.

I've got babies! Hurray! There are a few little green shoots coming out of the soil! Too small for pictures but visible to the eye. This is too exciting. I hope I don't get too hooked on this, or I might have to convert my veggie garden into a nursery.

Tom,

I am afraid you are too late in your concern about not getting too hooked. I am going to do whatever I can to get my "babies" to bloom stage. Have a new bed planned that was not even an inkling of a thought a week ago, but the "babies" have to have a place to grow, about 400 of them.

Congrats papa!

K Hurray!

Seedlings add another exciting dimension to bloom season. I have about two dozen that I kept that bloomed last year so now I'll judge the second year bloom. Also a few planted last year that I hope will bloom and a few that germinated this year that I will need to find room for. Room is always a problem. My former tomato bed now contains iris but I can get fresh tomatoes from my son and other things from farmer stands. Priorities Rolling my eyes. Here are a few seedlings from last year

How exciting Tom! Can't wait to see pictures of your sprouts. No need to lose the veggie garden (yet) -- judging from the pictures you've posted, you have room for quite a few if you only use the perimeter!! nodding

Oh my word Katherine -- 400?????? Whistling

Paul -- I absolutely love your pink Iris with the red beard. The others are nice too -- but the PINK!!! Lovey dubby Can I be first in line to buy a rhizome? Have I asked you this before??? Rolling on the floor laughing

Mary Ann,

That is the number now, but there will be hardiness issues with some for sure and I have no idea what the usual stats are on bringing them to maturity. Gotta good start, though. They are as cute as can be and they want to live. It is like 400 little hands in the air saying, "I wanna grow up". Oh my!!\\ Smiling

See, Paul throws out there some beautiful pictures to encourage us. They are sooooo pretty!!

Lucy that looks like a great project very pretty already, I wish I would have bought some SDB's last year maybe they would have been growing here by now we are still pretty slow not much growth on anything yet I am waiting on the Forsythia to bloom it is always 1st.

Tom glad to see they are taking off, you will be amazed how fast they will grow in the coming months and yes I think you need to do a few crosses very addicting now that I know we can actually get them to grow in the midwest.

Katherine that sounds like a lot of fun a new bed and 400 new seedlings you will be busy but next spring when they start blooming Thumbs up

Paul I really like them all hard to pic my favorite of your kids there, but I am partial to That's All Folks and your picture looks like a improvement to it.
