Starting off our ATP Hybridizer series are the husband and wife team of Patrick and Grace Stamile.
When Juli and I were working out the details for this series we thought the hardest part would be choosing each weeks feature hybridizer. After sitting with paper and pen for the past three days I can tell you writing an introduction for our first hybridizers in the series had me stumped. What could I say about two of the most talented hybridizers in the world of daylilies? The Stamile name is well known throughout the daylily world for their cultivars, all shapes, sizes and colors. From fancy edges, amazing patterns, clear pinks, whites and purples, Spiders, Doubles, Unusual and the Sculpted forms, to Grace’s perfectly proportioned mini’s and Patrick’s “candy” series for those of us with a sweet tooth for daylilies with bold, bright eyes. The list of individual cultivars bearing the Stamile name that have been recognized with AHS cultivar awards is long, garden value goes far beyond just a pretty flower to the quality of the plant beneath. The cultivars Wedding Band, Strawberry Candy and Custard Candy have all been awarded The Stout Silver Medal, the highest honor a daylily can receive. Both, Patrick and Grace, Patrick in 1997 and Grace in 2012, have the distinction of receiving the American Hemerocallis Societies personal award for excellence in the field of hybridizing, the Bertrand Farr Silver Medal. The quality and scope of their hybridizing vision and creativity can be seen growing in gardens around the world.
Many Stamile cultivars have been and continue to be grown in my garden. The first was Mystical Rainbow an early pattern daylily that proved to be a wonderful garden plant and also valuable for hybridizing patterns. From the “Candy” series I still grow Elegant Candy, Awesome Candy and Huckleberry Candy which never cease to amaze me with their perfect flowers. Night Embers, a distinctive dark cherry red Double, with a bloom shaped like a rose, grows beside Mount Helena (Grooms 85) each complimenting the other. Whiter Shade is one of the clearest whites I’ve ever seen and may not be as widely grown as it deserves. Screen Pattern another, newer, pattern from Pat. A few of Pat’s UF’s and Spiders are here as well, Bali Watercolor and Wild and Wonderful are two that stand out, and then there is the deeply carved Sculpted form, Bas Relief. Grace’s mini’s have proven to be incredible performers here, My Gal Sal is a personal favorite and I’ve seen stunning clumps of Broadway Valentine not only in my garden but in gardens in Ohio, New York, Mass. and Conn.

Please join in and post your favorite Stamile cultivars, stories and comments.

NOTE - You can find all the award winning cultivars, with images, by going to the ATP daylily database, click on “Search By Characteristics”, in the “Hybridizer “box type “Stamile” then scroll down to the AHS Awards section. Check the box for the award you would like results for and click “search”.

What can I say about them that hasn't been said before. All I know is that 2007 was the first year I started buying new intros. Theirs were the first ones I bought. I have more Stamile intros than anyone else. Here are my favorites just a few of many. I will add more later.

I used to grow quite a few of Pat Stamile's. Now that I have cut back so much, I think the only Stamile I have left here is one of Grace's. Several of my seedlings that I kept have a Stamile as one of the parents.

For now, I will post this photo of Grace's Little Wild Flower, that I still grow. I just added it to the database, along with a comment on how well it does and how well I like it. I wish I knew of others of Grace's did this well up here in my area. I love the little bitty daylilies, and a friend gave me this one years ago. I have some little ones in the small area that gets some direct sun between my front sidewalk and a shade bed.

Please enlarge the photo - you'll see how many buds this little clump put out last year! Not a budcount of 50, but not bad for a tiny flower on a very small plant with little to no care, no fertilizing, no extra water etc.

I really love seeing all these beautiful blooms, and hopefully I won't duplicate any that have already been shown. Dot is an amazing photographer and I do love to see her pictures!

I was so fortunate to meet the Stamiles at Bill Maryott's nursery at a Region 7 gathering back in August of 2011, and here is a picture I took of them with Sue Brown (CalifSue) and her mom. Unfortunately the shutter wasn't quite open enough and I didn't realize it until the moment was over, but at least I got a picture. The Stamiles are really amazing people, and I simply can't believe the hybridizing they have done over the course of their careers.

Grace is in white, next to Pat.

I agree I'm just begining to really admire the little blooms in the garden. The smaller ones tuck in so nicely at the front of the beds and the taller ones pack a punch with intense saturated colors. Little Surfer Girl and The Last Mohican...must add to the list. I've only seen a few edge no eye cv's up this way, some of the early ones hybridized were to tender for the north. I would like to know, is anyone zone 4/5 is growing the Stamile hybridized ones? They are very pretty.

Dot, your images are beautiful!

I just had to take another look before bedtime. These are totally wonderful!!! I foresee another spending spree before long. This is the first hybridizer to be listed. I'll be in big trouble if I buy all of these I want and then there's so many more out there to be listed. Someone needs to tell my Dear Hubby to hide the credit cards.
