Hi everyone! Think there isn't a daffodil forum in cubits? Anyone know of one?

Janice, your bouquet is lovely! What a wonderful variety! There are so many Daffodil varieties, a forum dedicated to them is a good idea, may just need to do that here. And sorry to have missed your post for so long.

I never saw this group on Cubits.org. I am so happy to see someone else who enjoys the beauty of these lovely plants. I can see the move will no doubt bring us all together, which is great.

I began growing daffodils years ago when I lived in a very cute little place I called "Laurel Run Bird Farm" I had about two acres , with lots of trees and bred exotic birds. I had a small garden and oh so many deer. They ate every thing I planted until I realized they did not eat the daffodils. So, I planted daffodils by the hundreds. When I retired from breeding birds, I sold my farm and moved to a larger farm that had very few trees and not as many deer. I missed my daffodils so I began to collect them and after six years I have ten big rows in the field of all sorts of hybrids and naturalizers.
I sell them wholesale to a farmers market in bunches. They have more than paid for themselves and each year I am able to add another three or four hundred bulbs.

I LOVE your field of dreams! So glad you found us! Do you concentrate on varieties that are good for cutting when making your selections?

When I first started the collection I had never thought it would grow and I purchased all different hybrids. After the first few year I hated seeing them die in the field, so I began cutting them and selling them at the end of our lane. Then I realized, people did not seem to be impressed or care that some were gigantic beautiful flowers and some were tiny little....it was really funny when I look back on it. I was so excited to share the beauties I was making all sorts of pretty bunches, etc.
No one really cared. The hybrids did not take the harsh winters as well as the neutralizers did, so after a few years of getting what I liked and adding some really different species, I decided they could pay for themselves it I sold them for cutting alone. So, that is how it happened. Now I buy mostly those that will divide and have the nice long stems to cut. Brecks believe it or not replace bulbs if you loose some the first year. I lost hundreds of pinks and white one year and I merely mentioned it to the salesgirl when I was giving an order. They replaced the entire order of pinks that year. I was impressed. That is why I spend the extra money and get the best quality bulbs.

All my bulbs are from Brecks and when the "cutters" are not producing i and the hybrids are, I add a few hybrids to the bunches. It was funny, the lady who runs the Farmers Market I sell to told me that they have to mix the regular yellow ones with the hybrids in order to sell the hybrids. I could have told her that. I thought it would be the other way around since by the time the field is ready to begin cutting, the regular yellow trumpet dafs are growing in everyone's yard. But even then, they want to purchase them. It is really a challenge to know what to plant to satisfy the public.

When I say hybrids that is what I call my pinks, orange, and the different ones that are really for show. They make beautiful floral designs. I use those in my home for Easter and my daily bunches I bring in for the family. Cemetery, etc. I have some pictures I can show you of the different varieties if you want to see them. I do not want to take over by going on and on. Just ask when you want to see some of the different varieties or if things get slow and you need me. Thank you for your interest in my Field of Dreams.

Now that I think about it, I'm not surprised. I've worked as a floral designer for over 25 years, and it does seem the public tends to like the classic form of particular flowers- I guess they want a Daffodil that looks like a Daffodil (to them). I've seen so many cool, new hybrids hit the cut flower market, that as a designer I was all excited about, only to see a lukewarm reaction from customers.

In trying various modern hybrids in the garden, I'm seeing a few that are on the decline. Not sure if it's the nature of the varieties, or if they're just not as well suited to this climate. Several are proving themselves vigorous, permanent residents of the garden too, which is what I love to see! I'm not really seeing any particular classification (trumpet, large cup, jonquilla, etc.) perform better as a group, but random varieties within the classifications on the decline. With more recent varieties, I think it's a matter of trial and error, as many aren't being widely grown throughout the country, and info on how well they perennialize in various areas isn't available yet.

Do you grow Pink Charm? That's a good pink here, naturalizes very well.

I would have to look at the inventory sheet to see if I have Pink Charm. The name is familiar but
I am 82 almost 83 and I must admit, I forget if they are here or not. Have you seen the Summer Daffodil? It is white and really does not look much like a daffodil. Our weather was so messed up this year, it came up and bloomed in May. The entire field is now grass. Another thing I like about the daffodils. As soon as they are browned, they can be cut and the grass takes over.

There is also a little one that I must check the name that looks just like a dandelion. It is so adorable. It amazes me how they can fool with Mother Nature and come up with these other varieties. I think I got a bag of them free from Brecks. I must find the old catalog and see what the are called.

They all just fascinate me and I adore them, each and every one of them. My favorite time is when they all bloom and I walk thru the field just looking and enjoying their aroma.

Thank you Janice. If I am here next year I will take you through the entire late winter and early Spring as the field comes alive. It is an amazing sight and keeps me sane when i think I have had all the snow I can handle, I see a little green angel sticking up in the snow and I know I will make it through another year of winter. Lovey dubby

Jacquie, I keep going for earlier and earlier blooming plants to get me through the winter too. Lately it's been lots of snow crocus and several Helebores that herald the arrival of spring, and I'd love to get a bunch of Snowdrops added this fall. Nothing warms my heart more than seeing those first blooms Smiling

JB, I am hoping my check comes too, but I am assuming something has to happen. I counted 31 private jets sitting on the runway here the other morning and I know those folks aren't worried about anyone's SS check. Plus there were a least twice as many just plain ol' private prop planes sitting there with those jets. Just think of how many bulbs one of those costs?

Anthony, Love the boot with the Hoop Petticoat Narcissus. I ordered 25 Narcissus bulbocodium conspicuus for next fall. I haven't been terrible successful with them returning well in the past, but will try again. I did have a nice showing of a white one last spring, Bulbocodium cantabricus, but we shall see if it returns for me next spring. Not sure what I am doing wrong with them, but maybe I need to give them the rude boot! Patti
