In the garden bed in the front and center of my home, I was planning on putting several Huechera Caramel next to pink shrub roses. Now I want to put in coral flower carpet roses instead, so I think I need a different Huechera variety. Any suggestions? The bed is sun/part sun. Thanks!

I think Fire Alarm would go well with those.

I like contrast. I goggled that rose and they had it with a lot of dark purple flowers. I probably would go with petticoat or another deep purple and some yellow Hercs to pick up the yellow in the rose eye.

I like both your ideas! What about 'Fire alarm and a very dark one like 'obsidian' or 'licorice'?

Hi, thanks for all the suggestions! Looking at all these lovely pictures, I can't pick just one! Lovey dubby I have a space planned for a wave of about 12 heucheras. Do the dark colors look overwhelming when planted in big groupings?

The more I see pictures of Caramel the more I like it, but I do think there needs to be more contrast. What do you think of combining Caramel and Galaxy? I saw Galaxy while looking at pictures of Midnight Rose, which I also like very much. Galaxy seems to go nicely with orange/coral and just looks so pretty. Perhaps a yellow or chartreuse one as well?

I do need to make sure they can take sun though. Will these be pretty sun tolerant, yet hardy in zone 5?

Thanks again! It helps so much to be able to talk these things out.

Caramel is a pretty heuchera however, I have problems with it getting rust and it will not take much sun. Many of the light leaves will not go in full sun. To me dark colors would contrast nicely with the roses when in bloom but in the winter would be dark to look at on stormy dark days. I live in Washington state and we have so many dark gray days in winter.
Do you feed your roses a lot? Heuchera do not like much fertilizer.

joann, with these beauties you have to do a trial and error to see what survives. For me it is the villosas and try not to buy many developed by Terra Nova. It is what I experienced. I lost many. So start small and research, research ask questions and more questions.

At this point I seem to do better if they are grown in pots. I am trying coir pots in the garden so they look like they are planted in the garden but are really in pots.

As far as color I garden in a different climate than Spring so dark ones do not disappear in the winter for me they stand out against the snow. Rolling on the floor laughing

I have Carmel in a lot of sun and it is great in my garden. It would look good with a orange rose with purple. You would have color after the rose is done blooming and I think it would make the rose pop when in bloom.

If you like Caramel you might like Southern Comfort more. It has larger leaves and it is good in the sun. As a matter of fact it seems to do better in my garden if I have it in the sun. In the shade it did not do well.

Southern Comfort and a good purple Heuchera might make a good compliment with your peach rose and when the rose is not blooming you would still have your peach/purple garden color.

I am in Zone 4 -- I moved my to morning sun till about 1:00pm and they do good with that. ALso I have lost quite a few but stick with those that are hardy up here...
Midnight Rose
Fire Chief
Lime Ricky
Southern Comfort
Caramel
Hercules
Pepermint Spice

there are others out there -- i need to go see what made it thru last winter again -- will add more to this list later.

What about Encore? It is a good one here and has villosa in its breeding. More a peachy color and a silvery veil rather than orange tone. I'm still thinking on the dark one. Choc. ruffles is a tuff one.

Oh yes Encore. Reminds me I have to dig it out and get it in some light. Hosta Zounds is covering it and it is fighting for life.

I went to my local garden center this weekend to check out their selection. I swiped a rose bloom to compare colors and it looked really nice with Fire Chief and Obsidian. Ok with Georgia Peach. They didn't have any Caramel or Midnight Rose left, but an employee I spoke with thought Caramel wouldn't look very good with the rose and that Midnight Rose would look the best but that the pink splotches tend to turn beige in the summer.

What are your experiences with Midnight Rose staying true to color? Also, how does Fire Chief compare to Fire Alarm? From what I've read, Fire Alarm is an improvement on Fire Chief?

I attached some eye candy. ;)

Love the 'Obsidian' with the bloom!! I thought fire chief was redder than that. Have to go look at mine. 'Georgia Peach' might be a good one if you wanted 2 different colors. Its new spring growth is very bright, if I remember right.

I like Obsidian with it too. But I like contrast. I never noticed a beige tint to Midnight Rose splashes. I could see GP being to close to the color or off color for the rose being the reason it was okay. Not enough contrast.

But I still wonder if you will be happy when the rose is not in bloom. When planning the garden you might want to consider what will look good when the rose is not in bloom.

I would consider what is going to compliment the rose and what view you will have when the rose is not blooming Spring and late Summer. I have Amber Carpet rose and it just started to bloom last week.

I am saying maybe you need the Okay color to compliment Obsidian when the rose is not blooming.

If you see what I did in my post Midnight Rose with a Rose.
The third pic I have Midnight Rose, Georgia Peach and Southern Comfort. So when the roses are not blooming they compliment each other but the when the roses are blooming they compliment the roses.

That Fire Chief has the least color I have ever seen on one, Fire Alarm is supposed to be a better grower. Midnight Rose has been one of the best growers for me .

Thanks all for the suggestions and opinions!

We have been getting slammed with storm after storm as of late, so I am stuck just looking at pictures and dreaming instead of doing much of anything in the garden. Once I can find Midnight Rose, I think I'll try a small combo of all four- Obsidian, Midnight Rose, Fire Alarm, and Georgia Peach- and let survival of the fittest rule.

I tip my hat to you.

JoAnn - i know how you feel.... sorry will be sending some more storms your way again today and then some sunshine.

Hey Bob -- which Heuch do better up here in the North again? I know you have told me before but I can find that thread.... so MN Zone 4 hardy?

(I have a few casualties from last winter and want to do some research to see what made it and what died and what got huge this year).

Then I can purchase some replacements in the correct family.

Thanks!!

I will give a list of the ones that have done well for me for a number of years.
Caramel
Midnight Rose
Brownies
Mocha
Pinot Gris
Blackout
Encore
Bronze Wave
Beaujolais
Mahogany
Villosa
Rootbeer
Frosted Violet
Southern Comfort

You will notice that pretty much they all have Villosa in them/ But I am zone 6a not 4. Iwill try to find a map of where each native species does best.
