We've had a LOT of rain this spring and the hostas are loving it. But I'm also having lots of stuff drop off my trees; so please excuse a few pics that show some of that stuff.

'Allegan Fog' - June 17'
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/fedcd6

'Alligator Shoes' - June 25
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/b55353

'Ani Machi' - June 17. This was the last pic before I destroyed the plant. It was new to me in 2006 and just this year it looked a bit funny. I brought in a leaf and it kicked around my kitchen for a couple of days until I ran a rest strip on it - POSITIVE for HVX and the signs were very, very subtle. It's probably been infected all that time. Hope I haven't infected something else. I've not had a positive HVX ID since 2007.

'Allan P. McConnell' is fast growing, easy to divide and makes a great border along the driveway.

My new garden arbor replaces a shrub I dug out a few years ago. This is the east side of my house and it's about 12' away from the neighbour's garage which also has white aluminum siding. Since the shrub was north of the hostas, I didn't think it helped them, but ever since I dug it out, the hostas have fried. I decided that the shrub had broken up the reflection of sun between the houses. The arbor does the same thing. Win-win situation. A craftsman at church built it for me and it's very, very sturdy. I paid him what I'd have paid to buy a good one and he donated everything above his costs to the building fund at our church (considerable since we just finished a huge renovation).

'Aristocrat' was moved to this location last autumn. 'Remember Me' is to the right and they look wonderful together. Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/8d6804

'Bell Ringer' came as 'Liberty Bell' a few years ago, but had already stabilized. That's OK with me as I was honoring the members of the handbell team I direct who gave me a gardening gift certificate. This seems a fast-growing, happy plant.

'Blue Cadet' does well in this very dark corner where many hostas have tried to grow and failed. Little, by little it's being converted into a border.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/9be6b6

'Blue Ice' is a little blue hosta, fairly slow growing, but gradually increasing.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/5abe4d

'Blue Ivory' will be dug and moved later this summer as it simply isn't growing. 4 years in my garden.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/b18d60

'Brother Stefan' has been in my garden a few years and it's growing by leaps and bounds.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/c1fbcf

'Bulletproof' - or at least that's what Chris Wilson says I can call it. It has all come from 'Touch of Class'. Growing well and with very good substance.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/83bddb

'Charlotte's Web' acquired late in 2011. Flanked here by 'Fire Island', 'Red October' and 'Paradise Island'. Some of this plant stabilized last year and it looks as though more of it may be doing that.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/dcc70a

'Cherry Tart' was new at the same time as 'Charlotte'. Found a spot in the garden for it last autumn, but have not yet had a chance to mulch this year. It's growing very well and the base of the petiole is bright red.

'Christmas Pageant' got off to a very slow start in my garden but is doing well now.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/5797af

'Country Mouse' is a different family from BME and I like it better than any of the BME family. Unfortunately, I lost my original one last winter, but this new replacement is doing very well indeed.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/fbb0e5

'Curly Fries' is still in a pot. New in 2012, I like it a lot.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/ef13a5

'Cutting Edge' was supposed to be a medium-sized hosta, but nobody seems to have told it that. This is maybe the largest hosta I have (I don't have many as I'm on a city lot).
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/028827

'Dancing With Leila' continues to do well. This is my own seedling from 'Last Dance' but seems to be nearly identical to a related plant, 'Dance With Me'. I've named it as a tribute to both its heritage and for one of my granddaughters.

'Diana Remembered' is an attractive plant with a spectacular white bloom. Huge and slightly fragrant.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/0e93db

'Dragon Tails' is VERY tiny - only a few inches in diameter.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/bf910a

'Eleanor Lachman' was new in July 2012 and is doing well. I bought this as a memorial to a friend named Eleanor. Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/121afd

'Emerald Ruff Cut' I've had for a few years and the leaves are HUGE, but there's still just one eye. Hoping those huge leaves will translate to more eyes next year.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/3a7336

'Fire Island' gets morning sun and instead of turning green, it tends to lighten to white. Fast growing for me. Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/6d8efd

'Fortunei Aureomarginata' is an old variety which I like. This one is quite mature.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/bacad6

'Fragrant Bouquet' - another older variety which is lovely. This one has grown a lot but is showing a bit of dessication this year. I'm expecting a heavy, fragrant bloom with all the rain we've had.

'Francee' was moved and divided last autumn. Now I have two nice plants.

'Fujibotan' has masses of shiny green foliage and later in the summer many double lavender flowers.

'Gemini Moon' was divided 2 years ago and has not quite caught up to where it was, but is getting close.Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/7e706b

'Ghost Spirit' never mists up completely in Ottawa.

'Harpoon' is getting fairly large. It is an unruly mound, sort of free-form and I like it a lot. Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/f725e5

'Heavenly Tiara' is a very pretty plant. Quite a lot slower growing than 'Grand Tiara'.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/133c10

'High Society' I've had for several years and it's becoming an attractive plant.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/98a2f8

'Ice Age Trail' has been in my garden for several years and is very slow growing. I'm hoping that with leaves this large I'll have more eyes next year.

'Ice Cream' is attractive. A sport of 'Vanilla Cream'.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/5d0553

'Invincible' is an older variety with lovely shiny green leaves. Unfortunately, it tends to be a bit of slug bate. But it's lovely right now.

A sport of 'Janet'. This was divided off about 3 years ago and now looks to have 2 sports - one with streaks and one that is solid green.
'Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/5d40ee

'Jewel of the Nile' is a bit smaller this year as quite a large portion of it had reverted to 'Dee's Golden Jewel'.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/d5fd6a

'June' - this is my original plant on the east side of my house - morning light. Usually it is more yellow that this, but we've had a rainy spring.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/139de6

'June' - this was a one-eyed division with no roots at all 4 years ago. I put it in a nursery bed and it did well and after a year, planted it on the west side of my house. It's now as large as my original plant - above - but because the houses are closer together on the west, it gets less light and is usually noticeably more blue than the original.

'Karin' looking good this year. Sometimes the cupped leaves border on drawstring. This is my elder daughter's name.

‘Liberty’ - the drama queen in my garden. I think this is in its 5th year in my garden.

‘On Stage’ fills a dark corner between my lilac bushes and I love its colour early in the season. It grows slowly for me.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/689244

‘Paradise Island was new in 2011 and is growing fast. I like it as much as ‘Fire Island’. It gets morning sun.

‘Paul’s Glory’ is now a spectacular, mature plant.
Thumb of 2013-06-29/ViolaAnn/aaae96

‘Peppermint Ice’ - I love this one which is perhaps 7 years old. Doesn’t grow fast, but shows signs of being slightly rhizomatous. Incidentally, there seem to be 2 plants out there with this name. Chris Wilson from Hallson gardens thinks this is the correct one, but if you check some of the pics in the Hosta Library and some nurseries, you’ll see quite a different plant.

‘Praying Hands’ likes this narrow garden where it can be seen from all sides. I’ve had it 6 or 7 years; so it doesn’t grow fast for me.
