See if any of this info helps. How does the rest of the plant look?

I had that thought also, aster yellows.

It's definitely aster yellows. Rudbeckias are the worst for getting that. I used to grow them with my Echinaceas, but I stopped because they kept getting that disease and I didn't want to risk my expensive Echinaceas!

So wow, I've been in the dark. I googled echinacea aster yellows and turns out my plants have had this for years. I just thought the deformities were just something quirky about Echinaceas. It never seemed that bad, most of the plant seemed healthy. Just some deformed blooms. But, then I thought back and I did have some that got sickly. I dug them up and put them in the "nursery". Some made it, some didn't. Those that recovered I planted out again.

After reading this last night and more on Google I sadly decided to cull the plants showing signs, even though some only had two or three buds/blooms and were otherwise gorgeous. This morning I dug out 10 beauties. I tried to console myself with the usual, "Its an opportunity for a new plant!" or give surrounding plants some more room to expand. Still I'm bummed. Sad

Part of me debated keeping the plants. I tried to rationalize that disease is always going to be part of a garden and the aster yellows weren't that devastating, especially since I've had it around for years! And actually I'm second guessing removing all of them time to time this morning.

But its done and I have to move on. But now I'm seriously reconsidering buying any more echinaceas.

I went there. Couldn't find definitive evidence. Since the plants were perfectly healthy and just the blooms jacked up I'm sure it was just mites. Maybe I can pull some out of trash when I get home

Jennifer, good luck with that! I also got rid of my Rudbeckias, why take a chance. Plus they are too invasive here. Thumbs down

When I got home I pulled them out of the trash. Cut all of them back and potted them up. All of them had healthy normal leaves. But at the same time I didn't see any mites either. So confused but I'm going to go with my gut. I'll replant out in the fall.

If it is mites you can just cut off the flower heads for now, but when they go dormant remove the dead stalks, and dispose or burn, because some parasitic mites will over winter in the dead stalks. (Eriophyid Mites)

You can't see the mites that cause similar damage without a microscope.
