I have been thrilled with the growth habit of clematis Arabella. It is non-vining, and I have it growing, supported by a trellis in 4 areas of my garden. I love this clematis that has been blooming now for months, providing continuous color this summer, while many of the other clematis have finished blooming..

This picture was taken earlier this summer.

Please share what your favorite clematis is, and why?

m. Mayleen has the scent.

Liberation has reallly large blooms.

What a great picture! I vote for Arabella too.It is the one that has continued blooming since the spring. I also love Margaret Hunt which is just full of blooms.
I cut it down in July and then get a second show in the fall

I also have Odoriba and Princess Diana which are vigorous bloomers. I cut them back in July too.Thumb of 2013-07-28/canadanna/53236d

Anna, going to have to get me one of those V.Venosa Violacea. Big Grin

I love the blooms on Arctic Queen, but managed to kill it moving it around. Will get another soon. In the meantime, Miss Bateman gets my vote. I like the faint spring green shading, it does well in part shade, doesn't mind clay soil, and seems to be happy with the roses and daylilies. Thumbs up

Bloomed right off the bat, Anna. But had it climbing around a metal fence post with full morning sun and it started to fry. So I moved it to this side of the fence--where the slugs promptly ate it. Tried 'treating' with eggshell and such, thought I lost it. Could see it coming back up this year--the slugs got it again. Dug around and found viable roots and put it in a pot. Where it has done nothing. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing I plan to get another.

Anna and Debra, thanks for sharing your beautiful blooms. Slugs are a problem here as well. Someone shared a tip about pouring diluted ammonia around the plants during the spring to help decrease slugs. I believe it was one of the tips posted months ago.

Annette, I just wanted to let you know that I ordered 3 Arabellas this morning from Brushwood Nursery after seeing your post and picture. I will plant them in large pots so they can spill over and will place the pots in a new hydrangea bed that will be going in once the trees are cut down and stumps ground in November. Thank you for starting this thread.

Doris, you're welcome!

Arabella has been one amazing clematis, and has continued to bloom all summer. I've also got 2 more coming from Brushwood this fall, to plant in my back bed. I've really enjoyed this clematis Big Grin

I always liked the viticella group for it's resistance to clematis wilt but recently I was introduced to species and primary hybrids and find their diminutive beauty really draws my attention. Of course Rooguchi is one of my all time favourites because of it's shape size and colour and it's very long bloom season.

Gardening keeps me connected to the
Bearsearch, Rouguchi is my favourite also. I love the pendant tulip shaped blooms with curled back petaloids, I love the deep violet colour, and most of all how it throws out masses of flowers continually from Spring until the frosts get it. Inmy area it also NEVER needs watering, a huge plus, and amazingly never seems toneed feeding either. I have mine climbing up a 'Russian Olive' - Eleagnus angustifolia. I like the blue flowers against the silver leaves, though it might look more striking on a gold foliaged shrub.

Vanessa,
Welcome! to ATP, and what a great idea! I have mine climbing up a lilac, but placing one in a rather sparse looking Russian Olive is a better plan! I keep the Russian Olive pruned nicely so it has more of a tree look than shrub look.
i have an espaliered apple tree that has 3 different kinds of apples grafted onto it, and 2 different clematis growing through it. It is pretty funny watching guests try to figure out what the blooms are, and later, the fluffy seed heads. One of the clematis in the tree is a Florida Seiboldi, and people actually think that the blooms are super large apple blossoms. It is beautiful, though.

Brian, your c. texensis and Roguchi are lovely!

Welcome to ATP Vanessa you have some excellent suggestions about where to grow Roguchi.

LOL Cindi, what a great way to confuse the guests. I bet your combination of plants is just gorgeous. I would love to see a picture of them. Smiling

Ha! These "expert" pruners need to get busy! The apple tree has grown wild this summer.
I will look for a photo with the clematis in bloom, but no promises.

I agree sometimes I have to move the blooms around, or bend myself in weird, contorted positions to get a good picture Smiling Most recently, Omoshiro bloomed facing the neighbor's side of the fence, rewarding them with it's beautiful blooms, as if they're the ones that love, care for and fertilize it!
