I can't find a source for seeds or plants of Asclepias variegata (Redring Milkweed). Does anyone know where to find these?

Don't feel bad, I have Asclepias curassavica seeds and can't get them to germinate either .. I'm thinking they probably have a germination inhibitor in the seed coat. I'm going to be trying again, but soaking them for a week and changing the water twice a day. I'll let you know if that does the trick.

I had no problems getting my curassavica to germinate. But I find most tropical so easy to grow. Betting red ring milkweed needs cold stratification in order to germinate. I'll gladly take a few seeds if you ever have any extras.

Soak the tropical milkweed seeds in water and they will germinate in it. That's how I did those. I haven't found anything that works with this kind though.

I looked into this plant, that is a beautiful Milkweed. It is not native to our area, so I'll enjoy others' photos. :)

Searching the internet, there's not much. The little I find say the seeds need to be sowed outdoors in the fall, or cold stratification if sowing indoors.

This link, third comment down, is very detailed and may help you with getting your seeds to germinate.

I like Milkweeds, so I hope this helps.

I wintersowed milkweed seeds, because they need stratification (cold period) and I got some to germinate. I have the milkweed variegata. The plant is struggling where it is and has never had a seed. It does get flowers, but they drop off. I'm afraid to move it but I'm sure it needs more sun. It was here when we moved in (1999) and is the same size still.

Redring Milkweed is a pain to germinate. Does require stratification. I have not had good luck and tried everything except Gibberic acid - may try that next year.

Annually there is a random drawing for these on Gardenweb when a chap has some. Not many.

They are very hard to come by - like Meads. Sad

Is anyone's redring milkweed still growing? Rolling my eyes.
Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing with joy.
