Well, I *was* going to order Nimbus, but it was going to cost $48.50 for 1 1gal rose. Nearly $50 for 1 rose? Not going to do that. Sorry. $30 for the rose, $18.50 for shipping. Ridiculous.

Our local nursery is having a rose-reduction sale: originally $24.99, now $5! Nothing particularly special offered, but I got a couple of old garden type replacements for this year's elderly, dying hybrid teas, plus a couple of mystery roses. At some point all the hybrid teas I planted many years ago will give up and I will have fewer leafless sticks, meanwhile, as I have plenty of room, they get to struggle along as long as they like.

At $5, I would replace several of my one-cane-wonder HT's. At $50, I would expect it to be full-grown, on a nice trellis, and planted for me! Whistling Green Grin! And guaranteed to grow for more than a few years.
(i wonder how many Vintage Gardens sells at those prices? OTOH, i shouldn't say much because many many daylilies cost that much and more, and I *Blush* admit to having bought a few of those in the "and more" category.)
Vintage Gardens was selling the one-gallons for $25 unless they were custom root. Why did they raise it to $30??
I've ignored my roses all summer, and they are blooming their little hearts out right now.
On the VG list, Victor Borge, Black Tea and and Veldfire are most tempting. Those 3 roses would be $90 plus $45 shipping, AND since they only have a few of each, there's no guarantee they wouldn't substitute. Not a deal I would jump on. Glare

Porkpal........

Are your HTs own root or budded ? I have rejuvenated all of the old budded HTs that I inherited when I bought this place. Even own roots, if they were already vigorous plants as own root plants can be rejuvenated.

Remember this thread ??

The thread "Rejuvenation pruning" in Roses forum

I am going to add a few photos here, but please remember, I am still working on these roses to bring them back. I don't do all of the work in one year because, I think that would stress the plant too much. Just a hunch.

This is a photo of three of the roses I have been working on that Mrs. J planted out in front. They had been deer pruned for years and were planted in an 8" bed. This was the year I widened the bed to 3' and caged the roses for the first time, so believe it or not, they are looking better than they had in the past. The unidentified floribunda is on the far left by the light pole. Tournament of Roses is the next rose to the right, then the NOID HT.

This is a photo of the NOID floribunda taken today ... the roses are between flushes, so no blooms

If you look at the base of the rose, you can see where I have removed one of the older canes.

This is a photo of the NOID HT taken today. You couldn't even see it in the first photo

This is a photo of a Double Delight I have been working on

This is a lousy photo of the top growth on Tropicana ... it started to rain, so I just snapped the photo and didn't bother to take a better one

Thumb of 2013-08-25/RoseBlush1/fbc8b7

This is a photo of the bud union on Tropicana, so you can get a sense of how old the plant is

I am guessing climate has an impact on whether or not it works, but my winter temps stay below freezing at night for about four months. The ground doesn't freeze because the day temps are in the 40s and 50s.

It takes patience, but I figure why not try ?

Smiles,
Lyn

Sorry about the poor quality of the photos, but I didn't adjust the white balance on my camera properly and just ran out between showers to take the photos.

My failing roses are all budded hybrid teas. I don't know how old they are as many were given to me by my son when he was moving from the house where they had been growing for some years before he owned it. He didn't want to leave the roses behind but had no place for them. Unfortunately most are down to a single large cane. I just reread the rejuvenation thread and plan to give it a try. Thanks, Lyn.

I'm glad to hear that you are going to give it a try, Ppal. Three of the roses I worked on this spring in a friend's garden this spring are coming back very well and have put out a lot of new basals. The others only put out one or two basals, but have branched out more, so they have more leaves for photosynthesis. There's hope that they will make it, too.

The roses in my photos above are probably 30 years old or older, so there's a chance you can bring yours back. It's going to be harder to get good budded roses, so if you can save the roses you have, you are ahead.

Smiles,
Lyn
