I first noticed this on Rollercoaster Rush, which has been renamed Rollercoaster Rust. Then I see it on Zephyr's Song and that was my favorite, the only one with teeth, then Grandma's smile. I was careful not to plant rust prone daylilies but I had no clue that these were susceptible.

Does it come off on your hand?. It looks like rust. You need to get the leaves with rust cut off and put them in the trash where the rust cant blow on anything else. Then spray, and keep spraying for a couple of times at least. Make sure to start spraying it first thing next year too, before the rust thats hidding in there perks back up in the spring.

There was a little bit of orange powder. Not a lot but I will cut off the foliage and spray. Thanks!

Fall is usually when it really pops up, at least here. I haven't seen any this year but I spray weekly.

I had rust for the first time last year and I think my screams could be heard in Idaho. It started in spring with new purchases from a southern grower (lesson learned), and after it got so bad by late spring, I resorted to pitching the worst offenders. By late August there were no new infections, and I thought I was safe. No sireee BOB! It returned in mid September and got a few more daylilies all spotted up. I don't spray (and won't spray), so pulling the infected leaves, or pitching the whole plant were my first two moves on trying to keep the infection from spreading. There were about 3 or 4 that had minimal infection however and for those, I put them under the back porch away from any moisture (including morning dew) and continued pulling any leaves that showed further infection. Finally, I had it all but stopped again. Fortunately we had a normal winter this year, and it got cold enough, long enough that no rust (knock on wood) so far has showed up this year. Just remember that water spreads rust as well as wind, so if yours are in pots try protecting them from overhead watering either by nature or nurture.....Good luck.........Maryl

I was surprised because I thought it had to be warm at night but it has actually been a lot cooler this year. It's been a wet summer and it rains at night a lot at night so I will have to come up with a game plant for next year. I only have one kind of spray so I hope it works!
You said before that you rotate your sprays and you have picked out three different kinds, right?
To my knowledge I only have a couple, like two rust prone daylilies and they do not have it. So is this a new crop of prone daylilies? or a lack of knowledge when buying. I assumed if it does not say it is susceptible then it must be ok, but maybe not. Maybe it means they do not know! LOL.

I had some earlier this year as well. It tends to show up every once in a while, typically on new arrivals as the winter takes care of it around here. Haven't seen any new signs in a while but with the temps spiking again I am on the look out.

Michele can I ask what you're spraying with weekly? Are you alternating or is it the same thing each time?

I use Headline or Cabrio if I'm out of Headline; Cabrio is just the granular form of Headline. I rotate with Propiconazole. I can't remember the brand name of the Propiconazole but it's one of the many generic forms of BANNER MAXX. I also use Daconil as my contact fungicide each time; I actually use Docket which is the generic for Daconil. I use Nickel CBM or Nickel Plus just depending on which one I have at the time also.

I usually see rust (if I'm behind in my spraying) when the insects are doing the most damage, spider mites mainly, which is spring and fall. Rust spores need an opening to get inside the plant (if it's not already in there) and insect damage is the perfect opportunity for the rust to invade. I used to spray every 2 weeks but decided this year to spray weekly. I will go back to every 2 weeks in the winter.

If I'm reading that correctly that is:

Headline/Cabrio or Propiconazole
with
Daconil
and
Nickel CBM or Nickel Plus

each time? I don't know why but spacing it vertically makes it easier for me to parse through. Smiling

And thanks!

Either hybridizers spray everything on a regular schedule and don't now the plants have rust or they don't have the right conditions for a plant to show rust. To my knowledge only 2 actually say anything about rust on their sites. I may be wrong so I apologize in advance but I only remember 2. I have bought from rust free gardens in the north and as soon as it gets to my climate it breaks out. Now these are not their plants and they initially bought them somewhere else, but rust can lay in wait until the right circumstances are there for it to show up. The plant was not here long enough to have gotten it here before it broke out so I know it had it already.

Since it is the end of the season you could cut those plants all the way back and then spray them with what you have. The rust lives in any visible green on the plant so if you feel comfortable cutting it way down then you could cut it all the way down to about 2-3 inches ( where the fan starts turning white near the base).

It would go like this

WEEK1
Headline(cabrio)
Daconil
Nickel CBM or Nickel Plus

WEEK 2
Headline (cabrio)
Daconil
Nickel CBM or Nickel Plus

WEEK 3
Propiconazole
Daconil
Nickel CBM or Nickel Plus

And then start all over again

Maryl, was that YOU? Hilarious!

I've never had rust, but just moved to Idaho, where it's much warmer in the winter than it was in Utah. I'll be on the lookout next year!

Thumbs up
That is fine, I will cut them way down and then spray. I have the Bayer 3-in-1, on the back it said it kills rust.

what kind is this??

Susan,

The ingredient Tebuconazole in that is said to work on daylily rust so that should be good.

I know of no daylilies that won't get rust when the conditions are right, everyone that has daylilies should be aware of this. Some hybridizers will give the results of rust resistance in there garden, but that doesn't mean they won't get rust in your garden. All of us in the south that ship daylilies do everything possible to keep rust out and would never ship a daylily with visible rust. Just be aware, no matter where you get daylilies from, north or south, you may have to spray them for rust.

I usually have a couple of plants each fall that have developed rust. My garden inspector is due out this month so I will find out then. The rust never seems to show up here until late summer or early fall. I really don't bother with it because our winters kill it.
