I didn't see a thread specifically for houseplants to thought I'd make one.

I brought my Begonia inside last night. The nights are staying cool pretty consistently now, so I figured it was time.

I just noticed tonight that it does have a couple of flower buds hiding beneath the leaves.
It's bloomed at least 3 times over the summer.,

Sadly I have no houseplants other than one or two christmas cactus and a snake plant. Having cats has put a damper on indoor plants unless they are in the basement under grow light.

Peggy that is pretty. I have lots and lots to bring inside for the winter. I have tropicals that I put in the basement and the others will be spread throughout the house. I will post some pics when I start to bring them in. It has been in the 40s at night and 70s through the day. I do not bring anything in until it is in the 30s at night consistently and 50s through the day. Cool is good for everything I grow as long as they do not get frost.

Karen I have a cat. I have had him for 6 years and he has never touched my plants. I have little spots in between plants in all the windows so he can sit and look out any window he wants to look out.

It is funny to watch him stepping around the plants making sure he does not knock anything over. He moves his front paws looks back to see where the plants are so when he moves his back paws they do not knock over anything. The big plants he likes to walk up to them and rub his head on them and he will lay around them like he is in the jungle but never touch them with his mouth or paws.

You're a good plant Mom, Lucy......my houseplants tend to die of total neglect! Probably why I have mostly Christmas cactus & amaryllis.

Husband recuts it & restarts the leaves when it gets too long. Needs to be done again. Start the leaves from the old ones.

Nice to see houseplants being discussed in the NE Gardening forum. I am a houseplant person since I personally think plants not only help filter the air in your home but they also give a home a warm lived in look. That of course is just my opinion.

Houseplants more or less get forgotten in the summer because of the popularity of the flower and veggie gardens most people have, but the city folk that do not have them must rely on houseplants for their fun and enjoyment. Many of us here in this area are city dwellers. I am not, I live on a Christmas Tree Farm. But my hobby and business is propagating Christmas/Holiday Cactus and selling them on different places on the internet. Many people think of houseplants as being tropicals only, but I have had some wonderful houseplants that were garden plants, cut back and brought in for the winter. I have had some beautiful blooms in the winter from outside plants that I brought in for the winter, so it is really not fair to limit houseplants to just tropicals.

I have about 30 Christmas/Holiday Cactus stock plants in the house just now along with, camelias, african violets, streptocarpus (Cape Primrose), african gardenia, orchid cactus, jasmine and peace lily. It does not look cluttered because I try and make the houseplants fit into the rooms as part of the decor. The baby plants that I propagate are in the greenhouse and I can enjoy the beauty of the older plants in the house during their blooming time. That is what makes this such a fun thing to do. Every morning you have a new surprise when a new bloom opens.

I think it will be fun to see pictures of what many of you live with inside during the winter. My biggest and ugliest plant is the disocactus x hybridus (ordhid cactus). The blooms are beautiful and I love watching the buds open and all of a sudden the plant is no longer ugly. It is a magnificent, beautiful, wonderful plant.
It is kind of like the ugly duckling.

Here it is and I brought it inside a few days ago.

Here is a shot of it in mid Sept. blooming. It blooms off and on year round. It is a wonderful houseplant, but it does get very big and must be kept cut back. You can start new plants from the cuttings without any problem.

Forgive me for rambling on and on.....there is just so many good things to say about houseplants, i forget to stop when i should. *Blush* Sorry!

Thank you Celeste, it is really old and only half as big as it was when i got it. I had to cut it to get it into the house. Rolling on the floor laughing It is pushing some buds again now. They like to be chilled before they bloom, now it will start to bloom and keep it up until they are finished. Then, it goes outside again and we start all over. It just had a complete bloom in August or Sept. It was so pretty.

How much light for a Christmas cactus. I have one which is in trouble & perhaps should move from an east to our west window. It has an apricot flower so would like to keep it.
