I fear what my shopping list will look like next year. It's all this forums fault...yep, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Well, I'm not going to try to list the "new' ones! Suffice to say that I grew about 200 cultivars( counting NOIDS), and It's more than doubled this year! (WAY more than doubled!!).Good thing is that the "wish list" is WAY down, too, so next year, I should be adding only a few!( )...Arlyn

Omigosh Tom -- I took my list from my database of Irises planted in the temp bed next to the garage. I must not have added yours to my database!!

See what happens when you have so many Irises? You lose track of things!!!

Note: the "Seedling # 2656" is a Joan Robert's seedling that she will not be introducing. So the number is 102 not counting the seedling!

As some of you may be aware, I wrote an article that appeared in the Jan/Feb 2013 AIS Bulletin about my efforts to limit my iris cultivar collecting by creating a "theme" that I could follow. The idea that the theme would severely limit/cut down on acquisitions. Hmmmm........how did that go?

Well, think of this as a College student. My major is "Sterling Innerest". I have a minor in: Joan Robert's. AND Dykes medal winners.

The problem is that had trouble following my self proclaimed road map. First issue is that I added another "theme". I added "J. Griffin Crump".

So what is the count?

Innerst = added 4 cultivars.

Joan Roberts = added 6 cultivars and two promptly bit the dust -they were small and rotted out in the Spring)

Dykes Medal = added 8 cultivars.

Crump = added 5 cultivars.

So I added 79 cultivars outside my limiting parameters!!!!! (so 80% missed the criteria)

Why? How did this happen? Can it be stopped or fixed?

Lets break it down:

I picked up 18 from my local Iris society sale and picnic.
I picked up 7 directly from Roberts & Crump.
I picked up 4 from Stoney Creek Iris for helping at an event.
I picked up 15 from Dee and the PNW sales.
I picked up 27 in two trades with Andrea & Brett.
I picked up 1 from Rainbow Iris farms.
I picked up 1 from AIS President Jim Morris.
I picked up 30 from 2 local iris gardeners.

was this year an anomaly?

No Greg, it's an addiction, like the rest of us, don't waste valuable time trying to figure it out, just get the shovel going and get another bed made. You know you'll fill it! Themes are for beds, not whole collections. My theme is "How many can I cram into this space"

So I did more research to try and find out what happened this year. Lets compare the numbers over the last few years to see if anything jumps out; shall we?

Note: I started out with 29 cultivars from my mother in 2005; mostly NoIDs which I was able to get the names for half of them. I only started buying in 2008. 2010 was when I decided to collect Sterling Innerst cultivars and got lots.
