We have a number of gopher tortoises living on the property here. This one was passing by where I was watering late this afternoon. I always smile when I see one going about their business. In Florida they are listed as threatened & they as well as their burrow are protected under state law. The only time they have presented a problem for us is when the hubs is mowing & can't see the hole & OOPS! the mower gets stuck.

Awesome!

I wish the poor terrapins here would get a break, in places they are still very common, but their territory recedes with each new road paved.

Once at a large party, a very mouthy gentleman was bragging about how he used to see em all the time on the road...they made the coolest poppin sound when you hit em...

He made an interesting pop sound himself tho, several interesting sounds as a matter of fact...when I popped him in his mouth, and he rolled several hundred yards down a very steep and rocky hillside...

In hindsight, I don't regret it one bit!

How could anyone hurt such a cute, not defenseless, but offencless creature!

I recently found this "big" girl on a mushroom hunt, as well as several more very mature specimens, and loads of shells from turtles that perished. Once I realized all the shells were huge, it dawned on me, I wasn't in a turtle graveyard, but rather a sactuary!
Please tree mail me for trades, I'm ALWAYS actively looking for more new plants, and love to trade!

Some people are idiots like that one who liked the poppin' sound. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Aw! So cute...we seldom see any turtles here.

Ann,

Thanks for sharing your pic. Like you, I have gopher tortoises on my property and love that they're here. I named the larger ones Tommy and Tilly. I've seen several small ones over the years too. We are in a long leaf pine sandhill area, perfect for their burrows. As you can tell from the landscape in my pics, I leave a lot of the area as nature created it. Hilarious!

Just curious, do you have Sherman's fox squirrels as well?

Rhonda

Hey Rhonda! You're not all that far from me are you? We moved into this house 1 yr. ago & have not seen hide nor hair of any fox squirrels. We have 80 pecan trees so I imagine if there were any in the vicinity, we would be seeing them. We have plenty of regular tree rats though. Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!
And hawks, owls & a veritable plethora of songbirds, foxes, deer, skunk & of course coons & armadillos Thumbs down & we have seen a coyote once.

We do have some property elsewhere in the area & we did see fox squirrels there.

Ann,
I'm 10 miles southwest of Williston off 121. I think you're probably about 60 or so miles north, not too far. I bet your tree rats love the pecans! We had walnut trees in Ohio and we were always finding nuts hidden all over the yard.
We have tons of wildlife too. But, I've never had deer here because there isn't much groundcover for them to eat. I do see them in towards town where there are more fields and underbrush.
Believe it not, I have never seen an armadillo on the property!

What's a Sherman's fox squirrel - are they cute?

Rhonda, if you have never seen an armadillo on your property then you are one lucky son of a gun!

Ann, you are so right about the armadillo! They creep me out. Thanks for posting the link
For Glen.

Glen, we see the fox squirrels on our property and around us quite often as the pine sad hills we live in are perfect habitats for them. I'll find some of my pics and post later this weekend. The prettiest one I've seen is fox red.

Rhonda...I had two small gopher tortoises that I named Tillie and Tyler Smiling Hopefully they are still out back where there is no danger of the mower getting them. I see the fox squirells near a pond on my way home...wish they were here as I love seeing them. Had an armadillo on the patio once. Not sure how it got there as it's fenced all around and very happy that the dogs were inside.

Isn't it funny how we name our wildlife as if they are part of the family? Hilarious! Aren't the tiny gopher tortoises just adorable?

They are so funny to watch....they can't run very fast. More like a hop with their tails dragging Hilarious!
