Up til now, the Daylilies Database had a very nice feature where the cultivars in the parentage were hyperlinks to their respective entries. Additionally, when you were viewing a cultivar that had been used as a parent in some "child" cultivars, then it would count how many children it had and give you a link to view all the children plants of that entry.

@KentPfeiffer has been patiently waiting for me to extend this feature to Irises, and today I am pleased to announce that this work is finished. It now works for all plants in the database, not just daylilies and irises.

Now, there have been some changes to the database to accommodate this. Starting now: the parent data is no longer going to be present in the custom architectures. There is a new field under the "Primary Plant Details" called "Parentage" and it is in this field where the parentage now belongs. The syntax is the same as it has always been.

The Parentage field that used to be present in the custom databases is now obsolete and will be removed. I already took care of the data from Irises and Daylilies.

If there are other custom databases that already have a Parentage field, let me know which ones they are and I will migrate them over to the new system.

I hope you all enjoy this and if there are any issues with this, please let me know.

I tested it on Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia 'Arapaho') and it's working. Click on the child plant and you'll see Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia 'Ebony Flame')

View that one and you'll see the parentage list. Looks like it's working pretty well!

Dave how to fill that new field if only one parent is known?

in the sempervivum-database there are two fields "seed parent" and "pollen parent"; but sometimes only the seed parent is known.....

and sometimes the only known seed-parent is mentioned in the field "History of species or Cultivar:" like "Seedling of S. arachnoideum 'Silberknopf'";

does the system also accept "S. 'Silberknopf'" and find the way to "S. arachnoideum 'Silberknopf'"?

if there is a known parent but it isn't yet in the database; what will happen if you add the parent-plant later.....

Peter, those are all good questions. You can put whatever you want into the Parentage field. If only one parent is known, it's okay to put just the one parent in.

The system is limited to cultivar names only. So species level names will probably not form a link although it's possible that I may extend the system to support that in the future.

At that time then the name should become clickable. Until then it will be just a text name with no hyperlink.

Dave, does this mean we have lost all the data that was in our Seed Parent and Pollen Parent fields in the sempervivum database?

So cool! An inter-connecting lineage line potentially traceable through the ages.
I don't suppose it can automatically load previously listed seed and pollen parent from data boxes in the first part of a daffodil's cultivar page down to the Parenting box? or must this be manually done?
When it has one parent listed as a (cross), I note if one of those is in database, it can be traced; am I correct to infer if the other half of the cross combination remains un-highlighted, then that cultivar has not yet been entered in database?
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

You're right, @jmorth. It highlights any found cultivars. Any words in that field that don't have a cultivar match are simply presented as text with no clickability.

Now, if you have a custom seed and pollen parent and you want to put them into into this new Parentage field, you can do that. Just put both in there with a " x " between them. I'm not sure which goes first.

You can experiment with it and see how it goes.

Lynn: The seed and pollen parent field that you have in the databases that you moderate are still there and won't be touched. But if you want to copy that information into the Parentage field then you will start to enjoy the benefits of that field. I would suggest that we do migrate that information over at some point.

I looked it up: the pod parent goes first, then the pollen parent.

So using Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Ruby') as an example, you'd put "Granat x Rouge" in the parentage field.

Dave, since this is the Standard of Practice could we have a scroll-over? Something like;
Pod parent x pollen parent
