Smiling I am going to...but with Patty's semp seeds. She sent a small pkg of seeds to me that I assume came from her semps and I have been saving liter bottles and now this weekend I have to slit them and put in soil and then count out less than the "way-too-many-seeds" amount and plant. Wish me luck!

Lucky you, Julia!! Thanks for sharing.

Julia, oops, didn't think about what to use, but can I ask what the soil mixture you used consisted of??? Need to know if I have to go out tomorrow and buy special soil mixture.

Just used a seed starting mix. I would think you could use a seed mix or the bagged cactus mix. These are in a cool greenhouse so I can control the water.

Good luck Bev. The seeds are really tiny tiny. Whistling
I still have a bunch more to clean and put in bags from different plants, I could share also.

Oh wow! That's a LOT of semp seedlings! I can't wait to see how they develop!
I suspect that I may have tried to harvest my seed too early, so it's immature. The test pots I tried all failed. I will put what I've got left of it out just as soon as we've moved and are straight (removal men come on Wednesday, yikes!) but I'm not too hopeful of the results. Next summer I'll know what to do differently!!!

I just went out and looked at the pots and SO many are germinating and some look as though every seed has come up. other pots still nothing yet but I'm almost a little glad as I'm sure there'll be some winter here before it's all over. Already have 8 pots that germinated before the cold weeks in December growing in the kitchen window.

Julia, see you didn't think this was going to happen did you?? I remember when my first semp seeds germinated back in '64! It still gives me a thrill.

Best yet, it is SUCH fun, even if you don't get a bunch of winners you have more than enough plants to give away to friends who just want something pretty for landfscaping.

Kate, hope you can get settled soon. Keep us posted on those new plants.

Kevin, with all the seedlings in there I believe some new friends will be in order!!! Hilarious! I usually have an abundance of plants coming out of the greenhouse around May too. If all goes well there could be a few gifts coming to Oregon!!! 'I wonder think those nurseries we are going to visit might trade!! I always do this with seeds, same thing happened when I collected heuchera seeds. After potting in to 4 inch pots , ended up with about 15 flats of heuchera.

Raining and windy here today!! At least it's not snow.

Julia,

Unfortunately most of the seedlings are sort of bad copies of their mother although some parents produce mostly nice progeny regardless of dad. 'Killer' is definitely one that gives all pretty seedlings. This year I crossed it with 'Fuego' and am looking forward to those. 'Jungle Shadows' is another that gives lovely seedlings. The 'Killer' X 'Jungle Shadows' row was spectacular! There should be several named from that group.

I like the "germination chambers" Bev. Think that will help keep the moisture in and get them germinating too although mine are doing their thing in the pots already. The pots are clustered by my garage, which protects them and then I use Remay over the top that protects them down to 23F on colder nights. The daylily and iris seedlings look fine and they are certainly more tender than the Semps are.

Now that you've all growing seed the next step is to make your crosses. At the clinic this spring one of the exercises will be deciding on good crosses to make.

WHAAAA Julia.
Lots of seedlings there.
I was a bit disappointed with my only 2 trials (so far!) as I haven't got hundreds of seedlings. But still, if all the ones I've got turn into nice colonies... I will soon run out of place for all of them.
But... don't you like variety? Would you rather have them all in the same shape&color... well, it makes sense. Otherwise, you'd have to grow all of those and then decide which ones are the keepers :)

Bev, are those Sempervivum seeds planted in the jugs???
Do they enjoy wintersowing ???

We shall see what comes of them. This is my first try growing semps from seeds. They may just be images of the mother plant and nothing new and spectacular. I was hoping for something interesting but it will be a great experience to grow them. I had so many of my semps bloom out this summer so I potted all the bloomers together in a container hoping the bees would do the pollinating work. Lazy me.

Julia,

Never did any seedlings from 'Purple Beauty' so i can't tell. It is odd how some are such good parents and others are such duds. generally anything that looks muddy comes back and gives you a pile of pigs. You will see some of those in my patch this spring!

In '13 I crossed mostly "pretty faces X pretty faces" so I should run into fewer pigs. However, I also did a bunch of crosses of 'Plastic' X big reds and purples that could be in the mud group, depending upon what genes are segregating. I would certainly like a red or purple version of 'Plastic' but it might take another generation.

Going to the data base to look at this one. Will it be pigs or beauties, one way or the other there is a ton of them. Blinking
