I am curious about the different kinds of foliage daylilies can have. This thread might just die a quick death, but are there different forms of foliage: long, wide, thin, strappy, high arching, erect, flat, curled? and different colours? variegation? ornamentation?

not anything that stands out enough to use for the foliage itself. I am not aware of a variegated dl, some do have a little pinkish color at the base of the leaves, but you have to look to see it and the tops of the foliage come down and hide it. Some dl do have thinner or wider leaves but not enough to worry about. Basically if your dl is not blooming, you will have no idea what it is, because they all look the same.

Identity Crisis ( White 2012) is a tet with white/green striped foliage, said to show it about 80% of the time and also shows the variegation on the buds and seed pods. You can see one small leaf sticking up under the top of the bloom in this image.

Hope this link works, it goes to Rich Howards sale page with images of Identity Crisis.

Back in '05 I gave a seedling to a local woman who visited the garden each year and had commented on the sdlg for several years. Two years ago during one of her visits she mentioned how much she liked the sdlg and the wonderful variegated foliage it had Blinking . I know it did not have variegation here or it would have never left! She brought the huge clump for me to divide and sure enough there were several green fans in toward the center and the rest of the attached fans were all yellow and green striped. After dividing it she gave me a few fans back Smiling It's also tet and has leaves, scapes, buds and pods that are striped green and yellow with a simple raspberry bloom.

Such a pretty variegation Hurray! I have had a handful of cultivars that have crimped and/or corkscrew foliage before and after blooming, but for some reason their foliage transforms to the usual flatter, arched type when the scape and flowers are present.

Uninhibited, just as it was about to send up scape

I don't know if it was something about the soil, fertilizing, or just a fluke, so I'll be watching them closely this year to see if there is a similar look.

Char,

When the buds are variegated green/yellow is the raspberry colour of the petals or sepals slightly different above the green areas versus above the yellow areas?

Daylily flowers produce several different types of pigments. Reds and Purples (and pinks and lavenders) are one type of pigment (anthocyanins). Chlorophyll is green. Yellows and oranges are another type of pigment (carotenoids). Green parts of a bud have chlorophyll in special locations called chloroplasts. As the flower opens the chloroplasts lose most or nearly all of their chlorophyll and make carotenoid pigments. They change into chromoplasts.

Variegated plants have normal chloroplasts (green) and abnormal chloroplasts (yellow or white). Sometimes the abnormal chloroplasts cannot become chromoplasts and cannot develop normal amounts of carotenoids. The normal colour of many daylily flowers is made up of a mixture of anthocyanins and carotenoids (plus other minor pigments).

In variegated daylilies, if the abnormal chloroplast cannot make normal amounts of carotenoid pigments then areas of the bud that were normal green may be one flower colour and areas of the bud that were the variegated colour (whitish or yellowish) will be a slightly different shade of that colour. Those areas will be tend to be a clearer colour.

I'm looking for variegated daylilies that have variegation in the buds and different shades of flower colour depending on the green/yellow/white variegation of the bud.

Maurice,
Sorry, I can't say that I noticed any difference in the color of the blooms. If there was it must have not have been very distinct, but then I get so busy during bloom season I could have missed it..... Now you have me curious, I will make a note to check for you this summer. Thumbs up

Did a little bit of searching for those who might be interested and found two more...

Glen,

I will be in Spain in 2016. Do think I am clever enough to smuggle a daylily into Spain?

No, Gerry - having worked with supplying specimens for tests for those x-ray thingies they use, I know they just pick up biological material in a flash.

I had two clumps of variegated Kwanso, one has remained stable with the variegation and the other has not. What's interesting about that was both clumps originated from one plant! For obvious reasons the reverted one grows much larger and blooms far more than the one that has retained the variegation.
