Is there a Fig forum here? I am interested in conversing with others growing or interested in growing Figs. I have great childhood memories of hiding under one of Mom's Fig trees (big as Sequoias to me back then) with a coffee can of water to rinse her 7-dust off with. I would eat myself stupid under there perfectly shaded and hidden from my sister & brothers. All we had then was Brown Turkeys and they were fantastic!

Not per se, but you could certainly open up a thread in the Edibles, Farming, or Tree forum about figs and I am sure folks would jump in.

Yep. You might peruse each of the suggested forums and try to figure out where fellow fig folks might be lurking, then post away.

We have one fig tree given to us by a friend. A Brown Turkey. And I don't know anything about figs!

I s’pose I’m just a figgy kind of guy but I’ll keep reading and researching to constantly learn more about my favorite plant species. I am about to move to an apartment with a huge balcony that wraps from the NE around to the NW corners of the apartment. I see no reason I can’t get a small tree or two going out there at the South corner. (HEY SHOE...Do figs do ok in containers for a year or so?) Even if we see no fruit while living there, we should be able to give them a loving start before we can move to a suitable house with plantable grounds.
Now that I think of all the space we’ll have on that balcony, I think we should place a potted grape at each of the two far corners. Putting some lattice work down to about 10” below the eaves would give them something to vine on and provide some additional shade in the apartment.
Comments? Suggestions?
ALSO, As soon as I figure out how to use this software Dave told me about I'm going to submit a FIG badge to Dave. Unless someone else already knows how to do it...

Yes, certain figs do well in containers and will produce. Brown Turkey tends to get very large (huge actually) but you can keep it trimmed to maintain it to a decent size. Kadota fig is better suited to container growing and will produce a better harvest in a container than Brown Turkey will. Regardless of the type I'd recommend at least a 15 gallon size pot/container, a well-drained soil mix, and a good time-released fertilizer. You can prune your fig into tree or bush form OR you could even espalier it. And in Texas (and other places where the temps are extremely hot you may want to shade the sides of the container so the soil doesn't overheat.

As for your grapes, I wonder if you'd do better running wire from your eaves down to your deck railing. Grapevines get pretty heavy and I'm not sure regular lattice would hold up long for good support, especially during times of high winds once the foliage is fully out.

Great tips all around Shoe! I will put all of that into action as we start settling into the new place.
I've heard and read about the Kadotas but haven't had the opportunity to try them out. I'll start asking the local centers about them. I do love me some Brown Turkey Figs and find them hard to beat but will give the Kadotas a whirl.
I hadn't thought of the weight aspect of the grapes as I've never tried to grow them. You have may well saved my Mini Vineyard before it ever got planted Thanks again Shoe!

I could really use some advice on figs. When we inherited this house from my brother, (DeLand, FL) there was a fig tree in the yard which he had planted. We do not live here year round and I see small figs sometimes when we are here, however, have never caught them when they were ripe. I believe the birds have feasted on them. I would really like to know when they mature, and perhaps even EAT one as I love figs.

I'd only be guessing because it's been quite a few decades since I've lived in Florida and never grew figs while there.

In my area (NC) figs are ripe in August, September and into October, depending on the variety. I hope someone growing them in Florida will come to your aid and help with your questions.

I sure wish all the different fig thread were together in one place. I'm wasting gasoline driving back and forth. I have the Brown Turkey and Celeste types.

Slice the figs in half (top to bottom), line 'em in a broiler pan, drizzle with honey, broil until warm, top with Marscapone cheese. Mmmmmm...won't be any left for preserves.

I kind of wish there were separate forums for fruits and veggies, but then the people looking for rhubarb would get confused.....
That recipe for figs sounds yummy! Sigh, no way to grow figs here, tho. They make a mess, but they sure are good!

ANYTHING that includes Figs or Marscapone has my vote!

@jaymeyers59 I just preordered three figs from Baker Creek heirloom seed company. They are supposed to be "rare/unusual". They are growing by Baker and three little plans will be shipped some time between April and June. They told me the mature ones they have (about 2 years old) have been producing wonderfully in their little greenhouse over the winter. I've had wonderful luck with their seeds this winter -- they have all sprouted (unlike the burpee and Martha seeds I bought).

Jerry, I found one thread talking about figs in the Propagation forum. It's from 2011 so pretty out of date, but still very interesting, and if you post to that thread, some of the other folks on there might respond.

I have one fig tree here, a 'Celeste' that has greenish yellow figs. It's not doing too well, as we have so much fun with fungus here in Florida. Every summer it gets rust on the leaves and drops them all just as the figs are ripening. I'm lucky to get any ripe fruit. Then it sets another crop just as our cold weather begins in November or December, so those ones don't ripen either.

I'm sort of frustrated, can you tell?
