Has anyone grown Monarda in Fl.? This is a question by a member who asked it in the "Ask A Question" Forum.
Here's the link:

I was given some Horsemint last Fall. It came from a sale by the Butterfly Garden folks at UF in Gainesville. It is in my garden & still a bit green even after all the below freezing days we had earlier this month.

Ann,
I put in a lot last spring. I created a new shady garden/reading nook. It is under a group of tall trees. The garden gets morning sun, dappled shade all day and late for about an hour at day's end. The bee balm did well last year and it is coming back with lots of new plants starting. I'm going to have to thin them some so they have better air circulation.

It doesn't get as lush for me here as it did in my Ohio gardens. The humidity takes a toll on it. But, I'll try to keep it going as the hummingbirds love it.

I planted some seeds in the only partial shade part we have here so we will see how they do for me. Fingers crossed.

Our native Bee Balm;...Monarda punctata needs full Sun. This is the only way they will ever be thick and bushy. Mine bloom profusely for a three month period starting in July. My bounteous pictures of mine can be seen in the plant files. Smiling

Yoo Hoo...................where is everyone? I expected to spend hours catching up & not much happening. Everyone in the yard playing? Looks like the rain will get here earlier than late afternoon,

I'm here. Reading. I got a new computer, a Mac, so going from windows to Mac is a learning curve plus, I had to get a card reader b/c my camera card would not fit in the slot provided. Plus, a new printer as mine would not work with Mac. Still learning the Mac & tweaking things to suit me as we all have to do with a new computer. Got the card reader the other day & went to download photos but it wanted to download all 2,225 photos on the card. Blinking YIKES! I do not relish the thought of sitting here deleting that many photos so have to go learn some more. Every crook & turn is a learning experience. Hilarious!

Monarda punctata is a Florida native. I don't grow it but I've seen it many times when visiting the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, growing in full sun.

How did they do? New to florida looking for the right plants. Completely different from the north. This is a different species then I'm used to but it is beautiful.

Mine were/are
Lemon Mint (Monarda citriodora 'Lambada')
They have done very well as wildflowers direct sown. They even came up last year in full sun.

I have these 2 which are demanding of water & would never survive out in my pasture/wildflower areas.
Bee Balm (Monarda didyma)
Bee Balm (Monarda didyma 'Gardenview Scarlet')
BTW, these 2 never bloomed for me since I've had them in late 2014. They are potted.
