Bud counts can vary quite a bit due to growing location, weather conditions, etc. But, regardless of registration numbers or varying garden factors, I'm just wondering which DLs have done well for people in terms of the number of clustered-blooms and overall amount of blooms?

I have yet to have a fan that produced lots and lots of blooms, or clusters, probably due to my not having very mature clumps yet. The closest I have come yet, with a relatively young double-fan, is with All About Eve who gave me a few clusters and overall produced the most blooms here last summer:

PLANET MAX just explodes with scapes and buds. This is only one clump.

I've not heard the term "clusters" before, do you mean multiple blooms at one time, or many weeks of blooms?

Oktoberfest is the highest bud producing clump I have, but the others have almost all been dug up and separated since planted.

I agree with Glen, Plant Max has wonderful large bloom clusters!

Sandi, I would assume that would be clusters of either blooms or even buds on one stem. I have roses that do that too, one stem would make an entire bouquet.

Awesome! Yes, to have a scape, or multiple scapes, up and opening flowers two or three or more at a time would be just amazing to me, and something I hope to focus on this year. Almost all of my daylilies open with one flower here, one flower there, one scape appearing only after another has finished blooming, even within a full clump of fans.

I actually still deeply cherish my lower-bud count daylilies, but so many of mine are that way that it is hard to achieve a "display" bed of daylilies that looks more fully blooming at any given time. So, it is about wanting to learn how to put together that kind of "display garden" of daylilies, in counter-point to my "hobby hybridizing gardens" where I keep the lower bud count fans.

Got it! I think with many it has to do with the maturity of the plant. I do not get many plants to bloom in clusters as you suggest, but we also have such a short growing season here in Wisconsin.

Bette Davis Eyes does well here, this is probably a 8-10 year old clump that I divided into 3 clumps and it has filled in

Gaudy Gaudy bloomed pretty good last year with many blooms open at one time

Untangle My Emotions puts on a good display

Fuchsia Fashion is a fun one!

I adore So Lovey, nice and tall pale yellow(just to left of blue birdbath), heavy bloomer like this for almost a month

but, for those you all have listed from your own gardens, A-w-e-s-o-m-e! These are great ones to have as a general resource - from people who have their own first-hand experience with them.

Here are some of mine that always have high bud counts in my garden.

EL DESPERADO usually has about 30 buds per scape


LITTLE MYSTIC MOON, a miniature, has around 35-40 buds per scape


STEALTH BOMBER is usually in the high 20s.


KENTUCKY LUCKY had 27-29 buds per scape last season


GRAPE TWIZZLER always has a bud count here of 25 per scape or more

When you are thinking about high bud counts, also remember the Bud Builders. Here is a link to a thread where we listed a lot of them. Many of the bud builders I have grown have high bud counts by the end of the season.

Thanks for giving the bud count numbers, I was not sure what was considered a high bud count. Looking at the search engine for daylilies I was assuming a bud count of 26-30 would be about average. Looking at the numbers you give that seems to be considered high.
The search engine goes up to 46-and over, does such a high bud count cause any ill effects to the plants, with so many blooms do the plants start to look gaudy or strange, are does the rule, the more blooms the better apply?

Siloam Toy Time also has gobs of buds usually. Tried to find a good clump shot , but I couldn't.

Seedfork - Hybridizers in Florida (Stamile and Pierce) list bud counts that are not realistic in most gardens. The Stamiles that are listed as having 40-50 buds on the registration are lucky to have 20 here. In general, the farther north they are grown, the lower the bud counts. In my garden, anything over 20 is a good bud count. I grow more than 600 daylilies, and I can only think of five that have ever had 30 or more buds per scape.

Debra. I have purchased daylilies claiming to have 50 bud count only to get around 20 from them.

I started a new thread on High bud counts before I spotted this thread. My apologies.

Lawrence and Winifred Englerth of Hopkins, MI. Winifred were known for introducing daylilies with high bud count such as 'Mini Minx', 'Skippy Skeezix' and 'Pinkie Pinkerton'. The region 2 Englerth award is in their honor.

I have "Mini Minx", and it is loaded with blooms on scapes that can be quite a bit taller than it's registered height of 26". Can't find my photo right now, but will post it when I do.

I'm looking for the other two if anyone has photos or a US source.

These were my longest bloomers on a single set of scapes last summer.
