Despite the unusually cold weather, my plants are starting to grow. We've had temps in the 20's at night the last few nights, and they don't seem to be phased at all. Arabella seems to be ahead of the other plants. I have 6 of them, and several of them have started leafing out.

Moonfleet is also starting to grow.

Hopefully, you'll find some growth, I'm now ready for winter to be gone. Everything is behind due to the prolonged cold weather.

They're all putting out new growth here, but I guess that isn't surprising in zone 9.

I feel so lonely! Only Dirt and I are sitting back waiting for growth. Generally I spot growth on March 13th but we're going to need some warm days for it to happen this year.

Arlene, a few of my plants are still dormant, particularly the ones in the more shaded areas of the garden. Many of them look just like yours. The only benefit from this ridiculously long spring is that we'll have blooms later on into summer.

Considering the gloomy day we have, I doubt I'll go out to do more than give the birds some seed.

Mine are showing growth. I hadn't cut back some of my vines and there were leaves along the vines. Yesterday was in the 70's and now it is 29 with freezing rain! I am not going out to take any pictures.Spring is coming to us all soon.

My clematis armandii has buds, and has come through the freezing weather we had last night. It's blooming later than it did last year, thanks to our lovely cold, prolonged winter.

Annette, I am north of you and do not have any green growth yet. This is a much needed reminder that I need to prune this weekend. My armandii looks pathetic. The prolonged severe cold has done a number on it. I will wait and see how much I may need to prune mine back. I will check for buds under the brown foliage this weekend.

Hi Doris,

This prolonged winter has really done a number on the garden. So many of my plants are taking their sweet time to start growing. You're right to wait to see what is going to grow before trimming.

A portion of my armandii also turned brown, but then I noticed a new green shoot growing from the brown stem that I thought was dead. I'm going to give mine more time as well, and once it warms up, I'll check and see what's really dead and what isn't.

I pruned probably 15 clematis (group 2) this morning. I have been walking by them saying to myself that I need to prune them and had not done it. Seeing your post here reminded me that I must DO it! I hope to finish tomorrow. With the nice weekend and next week's mild temperatures forecasted, everything will really start growing. I think I will use this opportunity to reduce the size of my armandii. I have never pruned it in the 5+ years I have had it, and it has traveled quite a distance on a split rail fence. Then I will wait and see if it needs any additional pruning.

Good work!

I've never had armandii but checked online and found this article saying it should be bloomed after bloom, not before.

Do as you wish. I'd just hate for you to eliminate the blooms unnecessarily.

Right, Pirl. Armandii should be pruned after blooms. This one has all brown leaves from the severe cold we have had. I am going to prune back a few feet from the end. It is probably 15 feet long sprawled on a split rain fence. Right now it looks like a dead vine. It is still alive and will have drop these dead leaves which it should do as the new leaves begin to appear. The leaves have always stayed green (it is evergreen) throughout the previous winters, but then this winter has not been a typical winter for anyone.

The new growth just might push off any useless leaves. Our montana grandiflora always looks a wreck in March but comes alive and blooms late April to May.

I've never pruned my armandii. When it's done blooming, I pluck off any unsightly leaves, and I also give the vine a good shake to get rid of the dead leaves underneath.

Here's a picture of it from last spring, just as it was about to bloom. I have no idea of how long this vine is. I've allowed it to take over the railing going up my front steps.
