This past year has been wetter than usual and there appear to be fungus gnats in the back garden where there is more organic matter like tree leaves. Drying out the soil is not an option with all the rain.

I drenched some affected amaryllis with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide 3% in a ratio of 1 to 4 water. ..like 1 cup peroxide to 4 cups water. I'm wondering if anyone has used this hydrogen peroxide treatment on potted daylilies?

I know this will not be a fix where daylilies are growing in the ground, but I'm planning on putting seedlings where there is less organic matter like leaves etc. Also ordered some yellow sticky traps and Gnatrol (BT )

Any suggestions appreciated since I've gotten new "babies." (The old yellow daylilies I've had for years have done well without any special care.)

Hi @xenacrockett and Welcome!

I have dipped bare root daylily plants in a weak hydrogen peroxide mix (about 10%) after dividing them with no ill effect before repotting or returning them to the garden. I don't know if hydrogen peroxide dipping stops fungus gnats on daylilies, but that is just because we don't seem to get them here.

For leaf insects, like aphids (which I do get), I use a spray bottle of mild dishwashing liquid that is mixed with water (also about 10%) on the foliage and it not only kills the nymph aphids but does seem to also "down" the flying insects around them. I do need to periodically re-spray to catch successive cycles of hatching aphids, but it is quick and easy to do and I do not have to wash off the mild soap from the foliage. I suspect the flying ones are adult aphids, rather than gnats, but might be worth a try for the fungus gnats if the hydrogen peroxide dip does not provide lasting protection?

I have done a 3:1 mix of water to H2O2 and drenched potted daylilies with it. They were fine.

I had never heard of Fungus Gnats before. Here is a Colorado State info leaflet.
