As we near the end of the first week of spring, I wanted to start a new thread highlighting cut flowers in the cottage garden. In addition to incorporating veggies and fruits in my garden, I like to grow cut flowers to bring in the home. I am hoping that all of you will add photos of cut flowers that you grow in your garden as they start to bloom, and also what you do with them in the home or office. These will not be formal arrangements, but using whatever flowers and greens that is available from your yard.

I will start this off with one of my favorite spring flowers, Freesias.

Normally, I use mostly just one flower type if it is showy. And I love pairing them with rusty/vintage/unusual vases that I find in garage sales, thrift stores, and friends' junk piles Big Grin

I will be watching and contributing to this thread as soon as I start to have some flowers. Daffs are almost finished and a lot of my regular early spring plants did not make it through this winter.

That would be wonderful, Arlene. Looking forward to your contributions.

Do you ever cut your daffodils to put in a vase? I have several clumps of various types of daffodils, but not so much that I want to cut. They supply the few early color spots in my front yard. I would love to plant drifts of them like some of the people with large yards, but my yard has limited space.

Those Freesia are gorgeous! Giving me zone envy on those! And the wonderful fragrance- bet near that vase is a great place to sit :-). The Daffs have begun blooming here, and those I like best for cutting are budding up nicely, so looking forward to bringing blooms inside.

Thanks, Neal. Freesias are one of the few fragrant flowers that I really like the smell. Looking forward to seeing your daffs.

White Calla lilies are the first to bloom. The colored ones are much later in the season.

Looking forward to seeing what you have in your gardens too, Veronica.

Camellias and azaleas are ubiquitous here in Sacramento. We used to have a Camellia festival every year along with Camellia queen and princesses, but has now just dwindled down to an annual camellia show.

There used to be quite a few trees in the yard when we first moved in the house 26 years ago. Through the years, they had either fallen, or have been cut down. Replacement trees were all fruit trees with one exception - a pink dogwood. Most of what I plant in the yard is either fragrant, suitable for cut flower, or edible. The pink dogwood is at it's blooming peak this week

Cornus florida "Rubra" in the yard - it is getting taller than I like so I will be topping it this year

Many of my arrangements were made to bring to work - there was a perfect spot for arrangements in the landing of the 2nd floor

Thanks, Veronica.

I have one bearded iris that starts blooming in October, and stops in March. Most of the other bearded irises are spring bloomers.

Traditionally, the earliest iris to bloom are the Dutch irises. They do come back regularly in my zone, and can take some thinning every 4 years or so.

In retrospect, I should have added more azaleas to the bottom. But, one of the reasons I started this thread is to get ideas from all of you out there. Thumbs up

Nice, Veronica!

None, not a one, of our flowering trees are blooming yet. It seems to me that they're way behind this year. I expected it after last winter, but it still seems odd.
