My first herbaceous peony bloomed yesterday Hurray!

This is Pink Hawaiian Coral. I normally do not post this many photos of the same plant, but as this is my first HP bloom for the year, I went to town Big Grin

April 2 - after the storm. By 5 PM that evening, it has opened quite a bit more

April 3 was a bright sunny day and it is fully opened.

Amazing how the flower goes from a bud to a full bloom in one day.

Color change as the after noon shade starts to come in, and by 5 PM, the flower closes for the night

And following closely behind is Raspberry Charm - blooming 10 days earlier than last year. This is year 2 in the ground.

Gorgeous blooms Dianne! I just ordered Pink Hawaiian Coral from Fina Gardens for fall delivery. I planted their Raspberry Charm last fall, and it has a nice bud now. I'm even more excited to see it bloom after seeing your pictures. 😁

I have had PHC for three years and no blooms. This is the third year actually. But I moved it twice. Never a good idea. It had all last summer in one spot so maybe this year it will leap ahead. It reminds me of Coral Sunset.

Beautiful pictures of Pink Hawaiian Coral and Raspberry Charm. Things are still pretty much frozen here in spots yet and so nothing has decided to venture forth. I will just have to live vicariously through you until mine do spout.

Thank you for posting! Hurray!

Lovely! I enjoy all the pics. Is that Raspberry Charm photo accurate in its display of colour? It is one peony I considered getting this year.

It is so wonderful to see pictures of blooming peonies! We have 3-5 inches of snow on the ground from a storm yesterday and the previous night--probably another month before I see any significant growth in any of my peonies. Not even a leaf bud swelling on the tree peonies yet....

I had Pink Hawaiian Coral but lost it to some crappy landscape workers, ordered it again last fall. Very happy that I did after seeing your blooms!

Thanks, everyone.

Liz - sorry you lost your PInk Hawaiian Coral. I got mines from Bannister Gardens 2 years ago.

The colors in this set of photos is pretty true to the display color. Here are the two side by side, along with a tulip that has a traditional red shade.

Pink Hawaiian Coral left, Raspberry Charm right

New bloom for today

Burma midnight - in real life, it is one shade darker. Couldn't get the right shade in a photo.

With this warm spell this week, there are new peonies opening up every day

For April 7th - Here is "Coral Sunset"

Gorgeous blooms Dianne. No blooms here yet, but the buds continue to swell thanks to the warmer temps last week. A "river ran through it" here today! We got ridiculous amounts of rain and had flash flood warnings. I planted a new Scarlet O'hara yesterday and half the soil washed away, I had to replant it when I got home from work this evening.

Thanks, Annette. Scarlet O'Hara sounds intriguing. Can't wait to see your photo of it when it is blooming.

Pink Hawaiin Coral, Rosellette and Dearest have shown pips. Amazing. I just broke down and ordered three peonies for this fall.

Mary - we are in two opposite growing zones. I've only been to Alaska once, in 2004, and I would love to go again. It is such a beautiful place.

Peonies is the one plant that I have no will power when it comes to ordering. The last large order I got from Gilbert Wilds which I know a lot of people do not buy from. However, I got 17 from them in 2012. 5 bloomed in 2013, and they are among the early bloomers for this year and buds are on a total of 15 out of those 17 plants. So, only 2 is still quite small. For an investment of about $10 each average, I can't complain. On a few of those plants, there are 6 or more flowering stems in year 3.

I do save my money for the ITOHs that I want, and there is no really deep discount on those. Big Grin

Dianne, the majority of my 1st peonies came from GH Wild's. Until I joined the different gardening forums, I had not a clue about the other companies I now use. Their tubers are inexpensive, and may take several years to bloom, but I still happily order from them. They're a great company if you want to order especially some of the older named varieties. What they send is way better than the dried up mess that I've bought in boxes locally.

I've learned to start the smaller tubers in pots, baby them to give them a chance to grow, and plant them in the garden 6 months to 1 year when they're more mature.

My new favorite company is Fina Gardens, they send tubers from the "Land of the Lost" LOL, the biggest and healthiest I've ever seen, and a lot of the Fina tubers planted last fall have come up with buds already.

I'll be happy to post pictures of Scarlett O'Hara in bloom. The plant done yesterday was in a 2 gallon put and had a lot of stems full of buds, hopefully it didn't sustain any damage from the rush of water through the garden bed.

Ok - so I HAD to look at the Fina website. At first glance, I thought, I have at least 3 of each of the color varieties and that is enough, but then again, I do like the Princess Bride and Miss America. Rolling on the floor laughing

Land of the Lost??? You "lost" me on that....... Confused

Hi Dianne, in the "Land of the Lost" movie the plants and bugs were HUGE. My reference simply meant that the tubers from Fina Gardens are the largest I've ever received. I've never seen tubers as big as these. I'll post a pic later to show the comparison of their tubers compared to another vendor's. 😁

Miss America is one of the peonies that I ordered for fall delivery from them. I'm looking forward to seeing this one grow and bloom. I noticed some of Fina Gardens' varieties have already sold out when I placed my order on March 27th. I'll have to check out Princess Bride, that's such a lovely name for a plant.

I have Miss America and it is beautiful. I will look for a picture or better yet hope it blooms earlier than later. A delicate white with a bit of pink. I had a shot with the sun sort of shining right on it. Looked 'other worldly." My new peonies almost always bloom the first year after planting. Adelman's would be the exception I think. And that may have been caused by my errors in planting. I think Dearest is too deep. I dug down a bit and found a pip about 3" below ground level which is way too deep. Hate to dig it up but I think I need to do so. The only question is to dig now so it has all summer to grow roots or wait til this fall when it is going dormant.

Annette - I need to watch more movies. When people refer to people or events from movies or cable TV (which I have never had) I am clueless Rolling on the floor laughing

Mary - I only have experience in my zone - and I normally move in the fall since the ground does not freeze, and the roots can grow over the fall months. Good luck with whichever method you use!

You're too funny Dianne. There's nothing wrong with not watching a lot of TV, it means more time to play in the outside.

Mary, for peonies that I find buried too deeply, I gently remove the excess soil away from them, and try not to damage the pips. My soil tends to settle here after I've planted my peonies, to the point where I can't even see to tubers. I've had success with the plants blooming once the soil is removed to get the tubers more shallow, without having to replant them.

Last year I made it my mission to clean up around some of my older peonies that I've never seen bloom, and this year they have buds. I also found a peony in an area where I don't remember planting one. I'll have to see which one it is when it blooms.
