I'd like to ask Dave to set up a custom database for Peonies. This would include all plants in genus Paeonia. An extremely thorough example of a custom database is The Daylilies Database. One feature of a custom database is the ability to add customized data-points which allows a customized search.

ex. Searching Daylilies
The customized data points from AHS link through AHS Awards are specific to the Daylilies database.

Here are some preliminary Smiling custom data point ideas, based on information from the Heartland Peony Society:

Plant Type:
-Herbaceous
-Tree
-Intersectional

Flower Type:
-Single
-Japanese
-Anemone
-Semi-Double
-Double
-Bomb Double

Suggestions please!

EDIT: An updated custom database:

WB = Write-box
CB = Check box(es)

Originator/Registrant: WB

Year of Registration or Introduction: WB

Parentage: (in general database)

Plant Type: CB
-Herbaceous
-Tree
-Itoh (Intersectional) Hybrid

-Early (week 2)
-Early Midseason (week 3)
-Midseason (week 4)
-Late Midseason (week 5)
-Late (week 6)
-Very Late (week 7)

Flower Form: CB
-Single
-Japanese
-Anemone
-Semi-Double
-Bomb
-Full Double
-Novelty

Flower Color: CB
-Red
-Pink
-White
-Coral
-Lavender

Nurseries list the bloom dates of plants by week; For instance, for most of the fernies they are a Week 1. On up to Week 7 I believe. That way you can match the week to your own area. For me a week 1 would be about May 25th. Obviously down south some of you will be past peonies by that time.

Maybe hybridizer and year? Lots of peony collectors search for specific hybridizers or for historic plants. Maybe even parents or progeny and whether it's fertile and how. Some growers label peonies that have good stems that don't need to be staked as landscape plants, that might be a good thing that people would want to search on, too. And scent.....good/bad or no noticeable, maybe.

This would be a good idea, but members need to contribute.
I like knowing the week of blooms.

How so? I mean I can tell you the dates that mine have historically bloomed, or even broken dormancy and then equate that to a week type cycle. It would probably work for up here but doubt down there.

Or did you mean colors. That is sort of subjective. So could we just submit the colors the national peony judges them buy to keep it more objective. I do that for my dahlias using the ADS data base. As well as their rating for size of bloom, etc.

I do not know how much info is necessary for the casual grower but this is one selected randomly from Hollingsworth which has all the info I need.

maybe a link to Carsten Burkhardt's Web Project Paeonia - The Peony Database

http://www.paeo.de/aaa/01678.h...

I have a google spreadsheet of all my plants. For all my peonies I have an entry with the link to Burkhardt's database.

For my daylilies, I usually link to ATP, which has a link to the AHS database.

on bloom times I use Early, Early Mid, Mid, Mid Late and Late rather than by week

Actually, early, mid and late work for me:)

flower type, size of flower, bloom time, color, height, width, hybridizer, intro year, distinguishing features

That does about cover it for the slightly more than casual gardener. At least those are the things I track in my database.

Heartland has a "Peony Identification Utility" which addresses a few data points, including bloom season (Very Early through Very Late)
http://www.peonies.org/ident.h...

Is this how bloom week corresponds?
Very Early - week 1
Early - week 2
Early Midseason - week 3
Midseason - week 4
Late Midseason - week 5
Late - week 6
Very Late - week 7

They also list Flower Color. Do these correspond with how Peonies are judged?
-Red
-Pink
-White
-Coral
-Lavender
-Yellow
-Purple
-Green
-Blend
-Orange

Should there be a write box for "Bloom color description" as well?
Evan

I've edited my original post to reflect your recommendations. What do you think?
Some of the terms I used are from the American Peony Society Cultivar Registration Form (Pdf or Word document). Listed under Administration.

I notice they list "CULTIVAR GROUP (Type):" instead of "Plant type". Thoughts??

Evan,

Could we also get a CB for "Fragrant"? This is on if the features I look for when researching a plant.

This is added.

The bloom weeks usually compare the time of bloom to Red Charm.
If they bloom before Red Charm---they have a negative bloom week.
If they bloom after Red Charm----they have a positive bloom week.
The week that Red Charm blooms is week zero.

Thumbs up Peony Bloom Sequence Sorted Alphabetically. In days + or -.

Does this change the relation between:
ex. Very Early (week 1), Very Late (week 7)?

I'd like to to wrap this up this week and I have a few questions. Any input, particularly pointing out mistakes, would be very helpful.

This is added as a WB.

Is this the correct relationship?
ex. Very Early (week 1), Very Late (week 7)

Do any of the Checkbox datapoints need a box labeled Other with a write box?
ex.
Needs support: CB
-Yes
-No
-Other: WB (This could be added)
