I was spraying my daylilies with fungicide, and I found one of the fans on 'Small World Hip Hop Music' with variegated leaves, part of the leaf is green, and the other yellow. How is this possible? I've never seen a variegated daylily before.

I have had a couple that out of nowhere put out a variegated fan but it will revert back if left attached to the others from what I am told. I assume that is correct because mine are no longer variegated and have not done it again. I don't know what makes a non-variegated daylily produce variegated foliage.

There are variegated daylilies I just don't know the names off the top of my head though.

There is one variegated plant registered, that I know of, due to a foliage mutation seen in a previously registered cultivar, Ride the Wind (Stamile 1998) My understanding is the fan was separated out, observed and allowed to multiply for several years before the new registration was made to be sure the trait was consistent for the new plant to be registered as a "new" cultivar.

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Polish Chameleon')

In reading the description for the cultivar Polish Chameleon it says the foliage is yellow in the early spring turning green later in the season.

Edited to add - this got me to thinking why I remembered about the registered mutation from Ride the Wind. The seedling I showed images of in the linked Foliage variation thread is from a cross of Huckleberry Candy X Ride the Wind.

Variegated Kwanso is in the data base.

top is" Abbey Dore Court", bottom is "Zebra", sometimes goes by other names, but I bought as Zebra. Karen M

Kwanso, Abbey Dore Court and Zebra have beautiful leaves. What color are the blooms?

So far have only had blooms on Zebra, kinda butter yellow. I believe the Abbey Dore Court has yellow also. Karen M

Kwanso flowers are exactly the same as the non variegated Kwanso - double orange. The main difference between the two that I have found in my garden is the variegated one has less bloom and is far less vigorous, in fact it has hardly grown at all in comparison and they are both at least 8 years old. They were both variegated when I bought them but one reverted within 2 to 3 years.

Yes, glad to see the Abbey Dore court blooms. Mine hasn't bloomed. Last year was the first time I had it. Traded a couple fans of Zebra for a couple very small fans of Abbey Dore Court to someone a few thousand miles away. I nave a variegated daylily called White Stripe. The variegation is often very light however.
