ok here's the "drift".... i received thru the mail 3 stutttgart (sp?) cannas over a month ago from hirt's....soon as they came i potted them in potting soil and watered them and again when damp to the touch....so far nada...i really didn't want to do the order thing but couldn't find these anywhere else,so....the rhizomes looked healthy when they came in by the way, and not being new to world of plants i would think they'd be showing growth by now,right?

Hi Randy, I'd expect some green by now. Why not unpot them, or just one, and see how the rhizome(s) are doing? Maybe they're focused on producing roots. You've got them indoors?

Canna 'Stuttgart'

I just checked Cleveland's night time temperatures, you're still mostly in the upper 30's and low to mid 40's .. I'm thinking the soil temperature just might be too cold or as Evan said, concentrating on roots.

Hopefully these aren't outdoors. They should be inside where the warming temperatures will prompt them to start to grow.

oh they're inside,and you're right about it being too cold out... i ordered over a thousand $ in hard to find plants all to be sent AFTER 5/1 and guess what's sitting all over the house, on the dining and kitchen tables, under the piano and on it at the large front window, etc. .....back to the cannas, i did unpot them last week and although they look good i.e. not all shriveled "prunes" ain't no growth, so i'll wait and see i guess...it's what we get for wanting what no one else has....oh! i'm going to do anther post re: roses i just got sent in from chamblees and came in full leaf, BLOOMING, and potted....never have i seen this before

I'll say this about Stuttgart: of all the cannas I've grown, it was the hardest of them all. It never had a lot of vigor for me, it was excruciatingly slow to grow, and it's the only canna that actually didn't survive its first year with me. I was disappointed in its performance given how beautiful it is.

I'm not familiar with the specific one you mentioned, but, FWIW, Cannas are just coming up here the past couple weeks. Few have more than 1 leaf yet. Incidentally, the Cannas I have were brought here from OH. Had to dig them up and store in basement there. Best of luck!!

They do love heat!! Maybe try putting the pot on top of the fridge?

I've ordered Stuttgart twice. Both times they grew fine but never got the lovely leaf variegation. They come to a swift halt as soon as our weather cools.

Contrary to Dave's experience mine are lusty, ramble around and return every year c/w tall stems, blue/green foliage and nice delicate flowers.

OK ELAINE! shame on you ( kidding).... there you are in sunny Fla. ...and here i am in slug city Ohio.. will try your suggestion for a warm spot 'tho.... i am ever hopeful for the Stuttgarts, and, in the meantime picked up 2 rhizomes of Tropicana (plan B )at a local nursery today where i could see 1st hand what i was getting this time ....and they are big,fat, rooted and budding (and now potted) so look out Stuttgart! As a gardener who reads up on all things green while he stares out at snow 5 mos. of the year, i have lists stuck all over the house of new hopefuls to try (always) and new plans, A thru Z, which i pore over...and over, and over again. I obsess, therefore i garden! Sound familiar ? ...and thanks to Evan and Dave et all I love this site

Same here.

Mine grew, but not at all vigorously, and it never produced a bloom stalk. It would still have been on my "keep" list, but the brown edges in the cream variegation turned me off. I was happy to see that this year several responsible vendors are now portraying this plant without touch ups to hide the browned areas in their promotional pictures.

I think I'll just rely on the Tropicana and see what happens with the other....sounds like Stuttgart has an inbred genetic deficiency then and who needs that...kind of like the modern rose that's been bred for size but lost it's scent along the way to "perfection"...it may also be that this plant isn't strong enough for the shorter northern season and is more adapted to the southern heat and humidity.
