Well, early June has come and all but 'Wheee!' are fully unfurled. Here are some pics. Many of these will be uncropped because the plants around the featured plant look nice IMHO.
It's still a bit early to pull out my crocus and tulip foliage; so forgive the messy gardens.

'Clausa' - one of 2 I have. This is a very rhizomatous plant that can become a bully in the garden if it really likes the conditions. Site it where nothing else likes to grow. It has lovely dark purple flower buds which never open.

'Dancing With Leila' is a seedling from 'Last Dance' which looks nearly identical to family member 'Dance With Me'. I've named it after my second granddaughter. I divided this plant a couple of weeks ago and have a nice division for Leila's other grandparents.

Your hostas are always so nice and happy looking! My 'Emerald Ruff Cut' has only looked nice one season in all the years that I've owned it!

Susie - are gardens ever all put together? But I've been seriously into hostas for about a decade. But my albums for 2004 show 27 varieties of hostas. I've got closer to 190 now. Nothing compared to my friends with rural lots who have 500 or 600.

A division I took from my original plant about 4 years ago. This one is west of my house and gets far less sun. Pictures taken the same day. There is always a marked difference in colour between these two plants.

You are right, Ann. We are never "done" with our gardens. But you answered the question I was really trying to ask which was how long have you been collecting Hostas. I'm a Johnny come lately, with them, I didn't realize there were so many kinds until I saw a display garden at a nursery in Minneapolis and saw how beautiful a garden could be filled with mostly just Hostas. I appreciate the education I'm getting here at ATP. Thanks for sharing!

Mouse garden. I'm no longer really collecting these mice as I'm rather disenchanted with the entire family, although I DID buy 'One Iota' this year because all my other white centred ones had died or reverted. In this pic, at the bottom is 'Country Mouse'. It's from a different family and is my favourite of the lot. The others starting at lower left and making a spiral are 'Blue Mouse Ears', 'Frosted Mouse Ears', 'Royal Mouse Ears', a reversion of 'Snow Mouse' to solid blue, 'Church Mouse', 'One Iota' and 'Mighty Mouse'.

'Orange Marmalade' - a slow grower for me. Need to try moving it away from my Linden tree.


'Paradise Island' was badly attacked by slugs last year (as were many of my hostas when I was away for the first 10 days of July). It's looking good this year, but seems much smaller. I dug it up to ensure there wasn't anything going on with the roots and replanted and will hope for the best.


'Patriot' - was moved a couple of years ago to be next to its sport, 'Loyalist'. The inverted colours compliment each other really well.


'Paul's Glory' has looked glorious the last few years.


'Peppermint Ice'. Nobody has indicated a rhizomatous tendency for this one, but mine certainly appears to be as it puts up new eyes at some distance from the original crown. The Hosta Library shows 2 distinct plants under this name. Chris from Hallson gardens think mine is the correct one.


'Pewterware' - a streaked division from a friend's garden. Last year, I had a large section reverted to solid blue, but I wasn't successful in separating it and that section died. It now has 4 good streaked eyes.


'Pixie Vamp' and 'Popo' share a container, but I think PV wants it all. I'll need to find a garden location for her.


'Praying Hands' has not been a fast grower for me, but it seems to like this location in a very narrow garden where it can be seen from all sides.


'Punky' gets lighter in the leaf centre all summer. A sport of 'Blue Wedgewood' which I have planted next to it.


'Rainbow's End', with it's glossy leaves is about as close to a slug-proof hosta as I can get in my garden.

'Rainfroest Sunrise' - nice cupped leaves with bright centres.


'Raspberries and Cream'


'Raspberry Sundae' - a VERY slow grower for me, but the leaves seem larger this year.


'Red October' - nice red petioles and a very late bloomer. This one was COVERED in blooms with it's slug eaten foliage last October.


'Regal Splendor' is a nice upright hosta that needs a better location in my garden as it has not performed up to its potential in this location.


'Remember Me' was divided this year. Took 3 eyes and sent them to a friend and 2 eyes will go into the hosta garden at my church.

'Rootin Tootin' - I mix this one up with 'Summer Music' below, though the colour of green is different.

'Sara' - my younger daughter's name. This one gets more yellow as the season progresses. It also gets larger than its registered size.

'Sitting Pretty' - looks great once I pulled out the tulip foliage around it. A slow grower. It took 4 years to develop a second eye and another 4 years later, it still has only 2. But the leaves are large this year. I'm betting there will be more eyes next year.

'So Sweet' hasn't done as well since I divided it and replanted it 4 years ago.


'Sparkler' - is not doing as well as last year and I'm not sure why.


'Spilt Milk' - mine doesn't have as much milk spilt as some.


'Stained Glass' - what I would call an unruly mound

'Stiletto' - a nice small mound. I suspect this would make a nice border but have never tried it as one.


'Summer Breeze' - love this bright spot in the garden


'Summer Music' hard to believe this is the parent of 'Summer Breeze' above. In fact it has spawned a whole fmaily of first and second generation sports including 'Dance With Me', 'Last Dance', 'Mango Tango' and 'Lakeside Meter Maid' to name just a few.


'Sun Power' has never been an outstanding performer for me


'Surprised By Joy' - a nice mini, though it will get slug eater

'Sweet Innocence' - I didn't like the way this was performing in my garden; so I dug it and divided it, intending to get rid of it. Guess what, it seems to like the back of my veggie garden a lot.


'Tears of Joy' is the smallest hosta I own.

'The Razor's Edge'


'Tick Tock' forms a very dense mound. This is another that I fully divided a few years ago and replanted in several sections.


'Tickle Me Pink' - new this season


'Tiny Tears' - a very fast growing mini which would make a good border or rock garden plant. Mine was divided this spring and 4 sections went to the local Hort Society sale.


'Twist of Lime' looks a lot like 'Lemon Frost', which is next to it, except for the tiny green margin.


'Venus' needed to be dug as it has heaved up and roots were exposed. In the process, a large part fell off and I divided it all and replanted in 2 locations this spring.


'Viola Ann' - a streaked plant I was given in 2010 when my garden was on the Ontario Hosta Soc. Ottawa area bus tour. I finally decided to give it a name - mine.

'World Cup' - new this season. Was a liner given to participants in the Ontario Hosta Forum. I've not decided whether I will keep it long term as I'm not sure it gets yellow enough to stand out and I'm short of garden space. However, we all know that hostas change dramatically as they mature; so the jury is out.
