I'm bummed. Really, really bummed.

I recently got my first seed pod ever, provided by this plant:

Thumb of 2014-06-20/rattlebox/01c626

As a result of that seed pod, I am now growing my first Adenium seedlings ever. I was first surprised that there were a few albinos among the seedlings. In researching, I read several times that variegated Adeniums can throw albino seedlings. But the parent plant is not variegated. I do not own a variegated Adenium.

At least I didn't. Then I was REALLY excited to discover that at least one of the green seedlings was variegated. Here are close-ups of two of the seedlings, one green, the other variegated.

Thumb of 2014-06-20/rattlebox/ef91a4 Thumb of 2014-06-20/rattlebox/445f7b

They aren't growing anywhere near as fast as I want them to right now. I'm so impatient. Still, I have to check them every day to see if there is any noticeable progress. I went out tonight after work to find the variegated seedling was missing. All the others were there, only the variegated was missing. Apparently a bird or something grabbed it, tasted it, didn't like it, and dropped it on the ground. The ~1" caudex had been bitten in half!

Does anyone know if there is any hope of saving this seedling? I know I have to let the wound dry and heal before planting it. Other than that, any suggestions?

I don't hold any hope for the bottom (now without a root), but I am hoping the top half may grow roots.

Mmmm, kind of small. Do what you think will work, like rootone and damp but not wet potting medium, and let us know what happens.

Sorry to hear of this. Durn birds, wish they could smell better or something.

Thanks, Melissa

I'm not hanging onto much hope here, but I'm SO disappointed that out of 14 seedlings, it was the variegated one that was taken.

Maybe the slight difference in color attracted the bird's attention, thinking it was diseased or filled with bugs or something.

Remember the commercial, "I could've had a V8 (knock)". That's the way I felt when I saw the word Rootone in your post. I'm out of town for a couple days, hope it's not too late when I get back. Not just for root stimulation, but maybe more important, for fungus prevention.

Right now they are in open air but under glass to keep dry, in bright indirect (no direct) sunlight. Wish I'd dusted the pieces with Rootone before I left!

When I got home, both the top and root sections of the seedling that was bitten in half were dead. But as it turns out, I might have been able to save the top with Rootone.

A week or so later, the bottom half of another seedling had turned to mush. I pulled it apart, scraped the firm tissue lightly with my thumbnail to remove most of the dead tissue, then jabbed the stump into powdered Rootone. I let it sit overnight, then planted it the next morning. I wasn't expecting anything (I didn't even try to knock off the excess powder), I just couldn't throw it away.

Yesterday I potted up all the Adenium seedlings, including the stump. It had healed, and had a root about ¾" long. It's the seeding in the photo in the red circle, photo taken yesterday before potting them up individually.

It doesn't look like it has a caudex from the angle of the photo, but it does. Being only half a caudex, it is just short, only about ½" tall (not counting leaves).

Another positive, the seedling in the green circle is variegated, so I still have one. The first several true leaves are more white than green, so the seedling hasn't grown much. The latest leaf is more green, and already it is noticeably larger than the other leaves, so hopefully growth will pick up.

The red/white picotee parent didn't set any pods this last heavy flush of blooms. It is getting buds again, so this time around I'll have to try hand pollinating. I want more variegated seedlings!

It is amazing what these plants can do with a little help, I have scrapped half the caudex away where it had rotted and it still bloomed the next year. Thumbs up

Yes, I guess it's a good thing these can be pretty tough plants. Good save! Hurray!

If you look at the caudex of the variegated seedling above, you can see a couple scars where it had been nipped by something (I suspect fledgling birds taste-testing everything). I'm surprised it was able to heal, though I guess I shouldn't be surprised any more! Smiling

Melissa...

No problem at all. Maybe it'll help save the lives of another Adenium or two! nodding nodding nodding

I'm not Ron but that looks like a Ti plant (cordyline fruticosa) to me.

Spot on, Hetty! I tip my hat to you. Melissa, the plant is Cordyline 'Electra', probably my third favorite of the Ti plants I own.

Hard to get accurate color rendition with digital photos (at least with the cameras I have available); the color is actually more red than fuchsia.
