I'd like to search for fragrant irises. I live in zone 5. Seems whatever I try, I get "no results found". I don't care about any of the other parameters but leaving them unchecked isn't working for me. I'm WILLING to check some if I knew what to check. I already tried checking the classification "Tall Bearded", thinking maybe I needed to be specific in that way... Still "no results found". Suggestions?

Go to the Iris Database, Select » Search by characteristics (height, bloom color, etc).

Scroll down to Fragrance then check one of the choices. Hit enter.

Hope this helps Critterg.

ex. Checking Pronounced yields 1077 results.

Hmm, which parameters are you checking? When I check the box for "Fragrant" in the Flowers field, it shows 4762 results.

http://garden.org/plants/group...[68]=&text[69]=&text[70]=&text[273]=&text[66]=&text[63]=&box_other[725]=&text[161]=&text[292]=&box_other[1370]=&box_other[1371]=&box_other[1372]=&box_other[1373]=&box_other[1374]=&box_other[1375]=&box_other[1376]=&box_other[1377]=&box_other[1378]=&box_other[1379]=&box_other[1380]=&box_other[1381]=&box_other[1382]=&box_other[1383]=&box_other[1384]=&box_other[1385]=&box_other[1386]=&box_other[1387]=&box_other[1388]=&box_other[1389]=&box_other[1390]=&box_other[1391]=&box_other[1392]=&select[2]=&select[4]=&select[186]=&text[5]=&text[290]=&text[291]=&text[6]=&box_other[652]=&box_other[789]=&box[10][64]=on&box_other[790]=&box_other[41]=&box_other[42]=&box_other[43]=&box_other[728]=&box_other[77]=&box_other[81]=&box_other[82]=&box_other[83]=&box_other[84]=&box_other[85]=&box_other[90]=&box_other[648]=&box_other[111]=&box_other[108]=&box_other[996]=&box_other[1511]=&select[317]=&text[314]=&submit=Search!

(if you copy and the paste the entire string above directly into your browser, it should show my search results)

That can be narrowed down a lot by going to the Fragrance Field and checking particular boxes. For example, if you check the box for "Sweet", you should get 2553 results. If you check the boxes for "Sweet" and "Pronounced", you should get 599 results etc.

Don't check all of the boxes in the Fragrance Field at once, though. If you check the boxes for "Spicy", "Sweet", and "Musky" at the same time, the search engine looks for an iris that has a spicy, sweet, AND musky fragrance and there aren't any iris registered that way. Basically, every time you check a box, it narrows the search parameters. Hope that helps?

Well.....
When I checked "fragrant" in the flowers field, with only zone 5 checked, I got "no results".
Here is what I checked:
Minimum cold hardiness: Zone 5a -28.9 °C (-20 °F) to -26.1 °C (-15 °F)
Flowers: Fragrant
Here is what I got:
No results found. Your query may have been too specific. Try removing some of the options and try again.

Perhaps I'll do each of the specific fragrances one at a time.... If that doesn't work, I'll be back here.....

If you are searching for bearded iris they are all typically hardy in zone 5. I would eliminate that in my search.

Hi Critter,
Paul is correct.

When you selected z5a hardiness zone only plants listed a z5a will be displayed. If they are listed as anything other than z5a they will not display (If listed as z3 or z4 hardy they will not display).

I checked only that one box:
Flowers: Fragrant

That got me the 4762 results mentioned above.

BUT DOES IT INCLUDE IRISES THAT WILL DIE IN THE WINTER HERE????

Whenever I search for anything, I always make sure they're hardy to zone 5.
This is the first time I've had a problem.

I live in 5b, and I don't have irises ever die from winter kill. Irises usually like to have a cold winter. You should be fine with any irises in your zone.

The Irises Database, like most custom databases on ATP, has it's own unique architecture to accommodate the particular features of the genus. The vast majority of information about irises, including hardiness, has been recorded in the customized portion of the database. If you want to include hardiness in your search, you'll need to check one of the boxes in the Hardiness field (6th one down, after Classification).

http://garden.org/plants/group...

Please note that if you are searching for tall bearded iris, for example, checking "Zone 5: -20 to -10" won't work because they all have the "Tall Bearded Zone 3-9" box checked, not the individual zone boxes.

For what it is worth, checking the "Fragrant" box in the Flowers field only works because, as I recall, Evan asked Dave to program the Iris Database so that whenever any of the boxes in the Fragrance field (except "Absent") the "Fragrant" box in the Flowers field would automatically be checked as well. However, there are just a handful of fields in General Plant Information part of the Iris Database that get used.

OK...
I thought i'd seen Louisiana Irises in a catalog somewhere that said their hardiness zone was higher than 5.

But I searched them in the database and they don't have zones listed at all...

I knew that, in general.

I don't want to pick a classification, because all are fine with me. I just want to be sure everything is hardy to zone 5.

Bearded iris are typically hardy to zone 5 (and well beyond), but there are plenty of other types that are not. Hardiness zones shouldn't be taken too literally, though. I grow a number of "hardy to zone 7" plants here with no problem and have lost plants to winter kill that were supposed to be hardy through zone 3. Hardiness zones are just a crude attempt to provide a simple answer to a complex question.

For what it's worth, at least 95% of the list of 4762 irises you get by searching for "Fragrant" are bearded iris and should be hardy in zone 5.

'All' may be an over statement but to my knowledge everything that is commonly grown is hardy in Z5. Some are not happy because of other reasons. Japanese are hardy here but not happy with alkaline soil and water. With some iris summer heat is a bigger problem.

In my limited experience, the iris database is a mixed bag. I would appreciate a simplified version that doesn't include every plant under the sun. I probably not doing it right.
