This is such an ingenious and appealing design, and I really appreciate the detailed instructions and the explanation of why it works so well. I expect this to become one of the most popular ATP Ideas.

Dave - That is a really nice spiral garden! I love the use of brick to make it. Very attractive! You should link the video of the spiral garden to this article. I enjoyed that video, too! Thumbs up

I loved it when I first read about it and love it still. Lovey dubby Makes me wish we lived someplace where we could build one ... or three; I'd have one for herbs, one for veggies and the third could be a perennial spiral for butterflies and hummingbirds!

Great job Whitinger family! Thumbs up

Beautiful idea. Can Dave tell us roughly how many bricks went in to the structure?

Hi Dinu,

I did some estimates this morning and I have:

The first and second courses were about 45 bricks each.
3rd and 4th were about 43 bricks.
5th course at 41
6th course at 38
7th course at about 30
8th course at about 22
9th course at about 19

Starting with the 10th course you're in that final top and not using much bricks so we'll call it 25 bricks to finish it from there.

That's about 350 bricks. Add 50 more bricks for waste and you're on track.

There are many things I love to know - as if I'm going to do in my small space, but this gives me a lot of delight and some base ideas. But I may not leave things like that. There is a chance of adapting the methods in my own way and on a smaller scale. I also loved the use of old wood at the bottom which will rot over time and sink to make way for more space to add growing medium on top. In our part, any wood on the ground/earth is devoured by the termites. In our old house even some windows are attacked by it. They had gone up 22 feet to reach the roof to get at the reapers! So we cannot use wood like you use there. So much wood you have used is fantastic fuel to boil water!
Thanks Dave for counting the bricks for me. Got a good idea of the number required. Helpful for calculations, just in case. I saw the Trish video also. I just thought it would have been more catchy had it been in the morning or evening sun.
