Bring a Snake into Your Home!

By fiwit

On Oct 31, 1997, I discovered a baby rattlesnake in my home office, curled up behind my chair. That is NOT the kind of snake I recommend you bring into your house. Instead, adopt a Snake Plant, also called Mother-in-Law's Tongue. The perfect house plant, it's easy to grow, difficult to kill, and its broad leaves make it very effective at removing toxins from the air.

Nice article Mary, very well written ... and I too got a kick out of the title! Green Grin! Although I've found a snake in my house a time or two it was never a Rattler or venomous type, Yikes!

I've had a love-hate relationship with Sansevieria over the years and currently only keep a couple of smaller plants indoors. In some parts of Florida Sansevieria grow in-ground but they are listed as a Category II invasive here, so for those living in Florida (especially the southern part of the state), take heed ... the Snake Plant is best kept containerized or it will multiply and take over the area where it is planted.

I did NOT know that -- thanks for alerting us to the potential invasiveness of it. Thumbs up

I tip my hat to you. I'd always heard that S. trifasicata was invasive and I had it spreading and taking over a large area in my yard years ago until we dug them all out ... but this is actually the only one I found on the Florida invasive list:

In 1982, I had to be hospitalized. My roommates and friends from college sent me a plant arrangement that included snake plants. I brought one of those plants with me when I moved to CA and I still have it, or rather, its descendants. It sits year 'round in a pot in a shady part of the back porch. I left one snake plant back in PA in my sister's and my bedroom. For whatever reason, my sister hated it but she couldn't figure out how to kill it. For all I know, it might still be there. My dad would have taken care of it after my sister moved out.

Mary, we always had snake plants as I was growing up, too, and after I had the house in FL, I saw my brother's plant bloom. I never saw one bloom until then either.

We used to have a snake plant in the family room. It bloomed and had a funny smell. DH thought it was my feet.

There are a lot of different kinds. Some have the most intoxicating lovely fragrance! But the one that's invasive, here too, doesn't smell very good at all, kind of sickly sweet. When I find one of the good ones sending up a bloom stalk, I chop it off with a bit of root and the attending four or five leaves, and bring it inside, they are only fragrant at night. There's a variety with nearly black green leaves that's the best for fragrance.

I'll have to go around taking photos now...

no, just lots of rain that resulted in 2 cancelled flights, an extra night on the road, and 12 hours in an airport -- but I'm home now, thank goodness! Hilarious!
