While out watering the gardens this morning, I noticed these growing in the lawn. I've never seen one like this before. Any idea what it is?

This one has a hole in the top and you can see right down into the hollow stem

There were two, this is the other one. A small hole in the top, but not very open like the other one is.

Could it be a stinkhorn (Phallus impudicus)? Here is a site with more info:

It looks like that's what it might be.

I did notice that the article mentions that the stinkhorn (where do they get these names?) is hollow down the middle.

I'd say a stinkhorn. Tom, if you smell it when you walk out the door or at least when you get within 30 feet of it; it's a stinkhorn. You'll know it when you smell it.

I'll will have to go see if it smells. It didn't seem to when I took the pictures, but it was still cool out then.

The other possibility is Phallus hadriani. From what I understand, the distinguishing feature is the color of the volva. Phallus hadriani has a purple tint, P. impudicus is white.

Yup, they're so stinky they attract flies! Smells like a dead body usually. We get amazing looking red 'cage' type stinkhorns down here.

It smells really bad, but I had to get down close to it to smell it.

Must be your cool weather, Tom. Wait until it gets really warm, it will 'perfume' your whole neighborhood.

Well I live in the country, so I'm far enough away from the neighbors.
