These plants have popped up alongside the southeast side of the house and I haven't a clue as to what they are. I thought I had planted seeds of Asclepias curassavica (Scarlet Milkweed) there but it's not that. There were about six plants growing but I yanked a few out and thew them away and there are still 3 remaining that I figured I'd leave until I can determine what it might be. A couple of them grew to 4 feet in height ... I don't know if they'll get taller if I leave them. Stems start out green at the bottom and are brown at the top of the plant and the stems leaves are rough and prickly feeling. I think I had the same plant pop up on the east side of the house behind my screened porch a year or so ago but I don't remember if I ever got an ID and I pulled it out. Without blooms, anyone have an idea of what these might be?

Wow, I've never seen Fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifolium subsp. angustifolium) around here but I'd love it if that's what it turns out to be! I'm definitely going to leave it and see if it blooms!

I dunno Lin, everything I find says it only occurs way north of us & the PNW. If it does turn out to be Fireweed, let me know! I'd like some.
This site says the underside of the leaves are blueish grey.

Here it says throughout Canada & the US EXCEPT in the southeastern states & Texas.

Ladybird Johnson Wildflower center does not have it anywhere near us.

After looking at lots of pic's I know it's not Fireweed; I'm leaning towards Ludwigia. I had Peruvian Water Primrose (Ludwigia peruviana) sprout behind our deck last year and it grew really tall ... over 6 feet. The plants in the photo's above remind me a lot of that Ludwigia so I'll wait and see.

greene: That's it!!! Hurray! Thanks for helping me remember. Swamp Sunflower (Helianthus angustifolius) I have photo's in the database from last year! Dang, now I wish I hadn't yanked and thrown away some of them a few days ago.
