And you have no trouble with grass growing up through it. I put in raised beds two years ago. They are 18" tall with no bottoms (wood). I put cardboard down before they filled with dirt. I have little sprouts of brass coming up mostly around the very edges. Can't figure how the grass could have grown up through 18" of dirt.

Mary, I got a little grass here and there for a couple of years, and then it just sort of faded away. I expected a lot more than I got. But it can be persistent and aggressive. In general I have more trouble with grass in my gardens than I do with weeds, even if they aren't lasagna gardens. Hate the stuff.

Right with you there, Jeannie. I think it depends upon what kind of grass you have growing in your lawn. We have a perennial grass here that most definitely can make its way up through 18in. of soil. It spreads by underground runners and pops up everywhere.

Same here ... the Bermuda grows by its roots underground, on top of the soil and also produces seeds. It comes from the yard next door. I don't like sprays but sometimes have to use them since they don't edge the fence line on their side. I made a "raised" bed with a kiddie pool and have not had problems with grass in it; however, it will sometimes dry out and that's a problem. The lasagna bed to the left of it has had some grass grow into it. I've had to use a growth inhibitor on occasion.

I do love lasagna gardening.

I have creeping bentgrass, and true to its name, it creeps over and under my borders all the time. In my experience, though, the grass issue is no worse in the lasagna gardens than elsewhere. It is always a problem to some extent. Whatcha gonna do
